There's a distortion that's appeared on my 599 GTO's engine cover. It runs on the left hand side of the front centre section near the GTO badge. Like engine heat from underneath has kind of softened it leading to what looks like an indentation. Has anyone seen something similar? Anyone have a clue what it might be? No one has touched it except the dealer for its annual service a while back. They swear it's not them, have no reason to doubt them. Many thanks.

If she is still under warranty (seems like the UK gets longer warranties than we do in the States), have Ferrari replace it. Could have been a badly bonded or heat treated part.

Thanks. Unfortunately she's just out of warranty (3 years here).

I'm being told by the dealer that Ferrari said in response to my picture they "have not experienced any circumstances where the panel has distorted through heat as there is no direct heat source below that area".

I thought there were radiators lurking under that cover but what do I know.

You might see if one of the paintless dent repair guys can get it to pop out. Usually only for metal, but who knows? Looks like an expensive part.

Is your engine cover carbon ? Mine is carbon and the few times I looked in the engine bay I didn't notice any specific distortion with respect to the cover. Wonder if its a material issue. I always wondered how carbon engine covers could withstand such massive heat generated from these high hp engines.

I have something very similar in my 612 engine compartment.

During the pre-purchase inspection, the inspector noted that it was a very minor issue; likely cause by a mechanic improperly leaning on it with too much vigor.

The inspector referred to the part as the radiator cowling.

I think CF can withstand more heat than plactic... thoughts ?

    Thanks.

The cover isn't carbon, it's standard. Even so it seems very odd for Ferrari to use materials as standard which can't withstand the considerable heat generated by the V12.

However I'm very interested in Southnc's inspection report on his 612. I wonder if a mechanic might have caused the damage to my 599 GTO?! A pain either way.

    Cheers.

I think mine is standard also. I will check on it tonight when I get home. I would think if this was due to heat then it would happen to other GTO also and so far I have not heard of this.

An excuse to get the CF cover, but I shudder to even think of how much that would cost.

Instead of replacing, the piece can be reshaped and then wrapped in CF.

It was about a $10k option if ordered with the car. Hate to know what it costs after the fact.

For someone who has F40, Speciale, GTO and 550, nothing particular, I guess. Just have it replaced when u sell the GTO, if u ever do.

Or leave it be if u don't.

Nice idea. Problem is given the very recent arrival of the 458S, Mrs Camlet would give me my marching orders if I look to spend more. She already thinks I'm mad as a box of frogs when it comes to cars.

Good advice. Wish I could be so pragmatic. In business, fine. But with my cars, impossible ;)

Besides it bloody irritates that something like this happens on a car costing me a heap of money new.

Maybe just stick to it as it is, if that is the case.:)

Let's be even more pragmatic then.

If nobody here with a GTO EVER had this problem, then yours was prolly man made.

Problem : good luck proving it to your dealer/mechanic if they are said it was not them. And even if you could, are u really into having troubles with them ? U really wanna look for another mechanic ?

If not, the solution is only what I posted :D

Another solution might be blaming your wife.

Exactly the same problem here, though to a lesser extent. Dealer took the cover off and reshaped it, no idea how they did it but it looks much better now.

Plastic can be reshaped when heated. Same way plastic bumpers are repaired.

Strange. Never seen that before on GTO's. Mine is still in good shape after 19,500 km with a V12 that produced plenty of heat. But I have the CF cover.
