Ok, so again with questions, and thanks in advance for your responses. I will have the dealer apply the Sctochgard paint film to the front half of the car and the side mirrors. This will cost $895. There were two other options that were on the paperwork that they sent me that I have not idea if they are worth it.

    1. Digicut Window Tint - Ceramic Tint. It says heat resistant window tint for $395. I assume this is the dark window tint that you see driving around.

    2. Ibex Surface Protection System - Exterior & Interior Protection. Description is exterior system protects paint finish from environmental damage. Interior system prevents stains and soils of surfaces for $600.

Are these things worthwhile or just a waste of time? I don't want window tint, so if #1 is just tint, I don't want it. Dunno what #2 is.

    Thanks again.

By Scotchgard I am assuming you mean 3M Ventureshield. If so I would recommend that you look into Xpel.

As for the "surface protection system", I would stay away from these dealer add ons, they just add on to dealer profit.

I would like the Scotchgard/3M applied before I have the vehicle shipped here as I don't trust any shops here to do anything "high end." I figure it would be easier for the dealer to do it before they ship it. I guess I can wait, but then it would be a while before I drove it back to Scottsdale to have anything done and I would be afraid of damage in the interm. As far as I know the dealer only does Scotchguard, but I can ask if they do the 3M as well.

Is there anything wrong with the Scotchgard option, or is the 3M just better? Other option would be (about a waste of $900) to get the Scotchgard now, then when I can drive it there have someone take off the Scotchgard and apply the 3M later. I assume that removing the paint protector will not damage the paint once applied.

I will forgo all of the other options.

    Thanks again.

Scotchguard is a 3M brand, but I can not recall ever seeing seeing clear shield under that brand; Scotchguard is a fabric protection technology.

This may complicate things, but a few suggestions:

Consider getting the car professionally detailed - which 99.9% means a specialty shop and not the dealer. We have all of our cars paint-corrected, it's pricey but what a difference. Do that first...

A top-end detailer can also put some premium coatings on the paint to protect it...there are quite a few options that are great (see under the Detailing threads for more)

Find a stellar 3M installer. The most frequent issue we've had with our cars is getting the 3M done properly; bubbles, seams, fit, etc.

This may add time, complexity and a bit of cost, but it's our best practice. (we're anal about this, you may have a more relaxed attitude than we do!)

Am sure the regional threads can offer advice/opinion about the best local specialists, your dealer should easily be willing to work with them pre-delivery.

Candidly if the dealer is shipping the car to you, you will have zero practical recourse to get any flaws addressed.

    Good luck

So, would it be better to take delivery of the car, drive over to to phoenix at a later date - probably in the spring (about a 6 hour drive) and then have the paint correction/detailing and clear shield applied? I don't trust anyone here to do that kind of work. Can they do the clear shield and paint correction in one day, or does the detailing have to "dry?" Or do I get the paint shield done, then have it removed and re-done when I am able to drive the car there? That way it will have protection in the interm?

sorry, I may be missing part of the plot? where do you live, and where are you buying the car?

my assumption is/was that the car is in PHX and you are buying it in PHX but live a distance away. if so, I'd try and get the work done in PHX, plus I'd imagine there are good local shops (ask and confirm in the local Fchat forum).

it's really up to you; as I said, we are anal about car finish, so we would not put 3M over anything but a great finish, we'd want to see and verify the 3M is as perfect as can be (which takes 1-3 days after install) and I'd want 3M before driving through desert dust. We took delivery of an Fcar with plans to do 3M the following weekend....5 rock chips later, we did.

An interim option would be to have them 3M it and just enjoy the car....if you want to re-do it later when you get it detailed, you always have that option. Most Ferrari owners are likely not as tedious and anal as we are with the finish on delivery as we are....

I live in Texas, but am buying the car in Phoenix. There are no shops that I trust here for any Ferrari work. I think that I'll have the clear shield applied at the dealer. I can then re-do it if needed when I take the car over there for service when I have a bit more free time. Thank you for your assistance.

Brian Crall is moving his shop to Austin. Where are you in Texas? There are excellent techs all over the state. Trouble is, the state is so big.

El Paso. So, first, Scottsdale is closer than any major city in Texas; and second, I would not trust almost anyone here to do service work on this car. There is one guy in the city who does exotics, but don't know much about him. Would rather take it back to AZ. The MB dealership had my car for just over a week. It came back with scratches on the hood from wind and sand, and I had to fight with them to fix it. Loved the MB, hate the service center here.
