This was brought up in another thread and I felt I would've been sidetracking the thread with this post so I started a fresh one My 612 had experienced passenger door rust and someone mentioned it was prevalent on 612's on the passenger side and I was wondering why is that? Also Taz questioned whether 612 doors are steel or aluminum inasmuch as Maranello doors were steel while that car was aluminum- Does anyone know on 612's? My car is not yet back with me so I can't check Here are some pix of the work if anyone is interested... The car’s all-aluminium chassis and bodywork are not only incredibly light but also offer other significant benefits in terms of performance both on the road and under braking. This is from the 612 brochure. Could it be that your car had been in an accident and was repaired?
Paul- Anybody with a refrigerator magnet can check. Sales brochures are not always the most accurate source.
My carfax is clean and so unless it was real minor- I doubt any accident Also you can see from the doors interior side it looks correct If the doors are indeed steel- it makes all the sense in the world My question remains- since I'm not alone on this- Why the passenger side on these cars & not the driver's side?
Mine had corrosion in almost exactly the same spot. We noticed it when it arrived in the US after my european delivery, so it was 3 months old. Ferrari repaired it under warranty. They actually offered me a whole new door, but wouldn't guarantee that the new door would be corrosion-free. From what I'm seeing on here, it seems to be fairly common.
Just been out with a magnet and the magnet doesn't stick. So all aluminium looks to be the case.door is not steel.
Taz, the brochure is accurate, none of the body panels are steel on my 2008 OTO. But MoeD back to your question of why this is happening. I don't have it on my car. Perhaps this was a problem on earlier year cars?
I'm thinking this must have been the result of some sort of manufacturing process issue, or perhaps had something to do with where the doors were stored prior to painting. On mine, there was a hypothesis that something corrosive had spilled on it prior to paint, but given the number of doors it's happened to, that seems unlikely-- at least by chance. Maybe overspray from some process adjacent to where the doors were stored?
Don, I just looked at your profile and see you have a 2008. There goes my theory about the year of manufacture. What is really crazy is that it showed up on your car when it was only 3 months old. Even unpainted wrought iron won't rust that fast!
Could the passenger side corrosion be because of the crown of the road and all the crap that gets accumulated in the gutter, and ultimately sprayed on that side of the car? Wonder if it happens on the "passenger side" in the UK? Just a thought... Probably wrong...
I have an 06 and mine has the corrosion. It is being repaired this winter. I have personally seen corrosion in the same location on three other 612s. All on the passenger side door.
That's one reason I think it was a manufacturing process issue. Well, that and the facts that a) Ferrari wasn't the least bit surprised, and b) they wouldn't offer any assurance that a replacement door would be any better.
If always in same spot and happens early on I would look for some type of dissimilar metals causing a galvanic effect.
Lots of Good theories, but I'm thinking we can agree it's definitely some sort of known manufacturing defect. The car is past the factory corrosion warranty time period, but I'm wondering if FNA would own up to this repair. Doubt it, but a guy can have some wishful thinking once in a while, right? LOL
& Thank you for the comment on the wheels Mr. StickBreitling. I initially didn't care for them and tried to resell them, but they've grown on me and have nice Ferrari flavor to them...
We need Mr. Vin # to start a class action lawsuit. Would this be a first for Ferrari? Mr VIN # has more powers than he knows what to do with.
