Sep 12, 2014. A Tesla tried to overtake me (on a private road). At around 130 MPH, the coolant light came on. The Tesla guy started shouting "Your car is on fire". Pulled over. Waited for tow truck. Ugh. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Got the plenum off. Look at this stupid hose design. 14K miles on the car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The design isn't a problem so much as the quality. Many 612's have had the same problem. That's what happens when you have your cousins brother in law make the hoses for bottom dollar and demand a kickback. High quality will not be the outcome.
Taz and a few others (thanks guys) suggested I ask Dave Helms for help. Dave and Jason didn't have anything of the shelf for the 612 so they started making stuff for me ! Took a few goes to get it right Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
But it wasn't quite right because the fitting on the long end didn't fit Image Unavailable, Please Login
So Dave made an adapter. The plenum went back on. But now we had a pinhole leak. Aaaaaargh. Image Unavailable, Please Login
So we made a special piece at a friend's shop (thanks Steve!) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Put it all back together. She wouldn't idle. Plenum off again. Wire harness got trapped, engine ate gasket. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Went to see Scuderia Rampante while I was in Colorado. Dave was at Cavallino. Jason showed me this. Ahhhhhhhhhh. Image Unavailable, Please Login
But the story didn't end there. Had a leaking fuel pump. But that's a different thread. Two pumps and gaskets later, I'm back on the road. Thanks to Bruce, Robb, Rico (BR Racing Los Gatos CA) Dave, Jason (Scuderia Rampante, Boulder) Steve (Sellers Equipped) and of course Taz
Brian, you got that right ! I was at Corso Pilota at COTA last year and during the first session, the man with the Pirelli hat said "And what is the first thing you should do to your car when you get home ?" I was not popular for at least an hour when I screamed "Get rid of those rock hard PZeros and put some Michelin Pilot Super Sports on"
Congrats on getting this resolved. I've been considering starting a thread on weak parts we need to replace in our cars for maximum performance. This would be especially useful for newbies.
BTW, I replaced a lot of the hoses with the Scuderia Rampante hoses while the plenum was off. The two front hoses are still factory because Dave has not got 612 versions yet, but I hear he is close. They are longer than the 550/575 hoses.
I'll second that. A 612 proactive maintenance thread would be really useful. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Shiv, Do you think a kit could be developed from your efforts for the rest of us? One thing I've noticed about the 612 is that it seems suspect to overheating - especially when idle. I remember the 365 GT4 BB (original Boxer) had similar issues - it needed to be moving at all times. Regardless, don't want to have a coolant failure. Thanks.
Adam- She should not overheat. Even in high temperatures while stopped, the fans should come on and stabilize the temperature at 190F. If that is not happening, something is wrong. Make sure the coolant is changed at least every 2-3 years, even though the maintenance schedule does not tell you to do so. Always use a coolant with nitrites to protect the wet liners, not BMW or Mercedes coolant or something similar, which is nitrite free because they do not have wet liners. Zerex G05 is a good choice or the Shell equivalent.
