Yesterday as I drove along in my wonderful, faithful, 'family' Ferrari, along with my 8 year old son, she began to overheat. I told him we would pull over for a minute to see what was going on, and let her 'cool down'.

Once pulled over, I opened the hood, and saw a 4"x4" flame at the coolant filler area, near the windshield. 15 minutes later.....well...a picture says 1000 words. :(

    Ohhhhh... So sad to see.

I've seen some 612 burned on the Internet. Most started on the place yours started, passenger side near the glass.
Can somebody tell why? What fails on that area, igniting the fire??

Wishing the best to Carlo. Very sad also for the 8 year old boy to be in such happening. Hope everything is ok .

That's a horrible thing to happen, lucky both you and your son were able to get out of the car safely.

    Interesting.

Is the alarm unit located near that spot? 360Trev found his alarm all melted and about to burn down, but that's on a 360. Won't surprise me if the exact same unit is used on the 612.

It would be interesting to find the cause so people know what to replace in order to prevent this in the future.

Wow, sorry to hear this. Did you ever acquire the luggage for the car?

When I was looking for my 612 I saw a few with the Ferrari fire extinguisher option. At the time I thought unless you are tracking the car, you're not going to need that. Guess I was wrong. :(

Very interested to hear the cause.

My condolences. Its always painful to lose something that you really enjoy and are passionate about. Although a car is an inanimate thing, we can experience great sorrow over a loss like this particularly if you had her in the "family" for a long time. Its almost like losing a cherished pet. Hopefully her replacement will give you just as much joy.

Cars are a passion, but who really cares ? A car is really just a grand appliance

As long as you guys got out safe, that's all that matters

Thank G-d you had the smarts to pull over and get out

Sorry for your loss, but surely you'll find a worthy replacement...

When you have a fire under the hood, NEVER lift it up - will only make it worse as you feed more oxygen to the flames.

Best to try to "suffocate" the fire and let put the hose of the fire extinguisher under the hose while trying to lift it as little as possible (yes, I know you did not have one).

I suggest all 456/550/575/599/612 to carry a large power fire extinguisher with them - cheap insurance.

To be honest once the fire starts better let it burn all the way and total the car...

Awful news - they're not making any more and that car is certainly not going to be restored.

Very pleased to see no one was injured.

For everyone's benefit please post information from a root cause analysis. This could lead to a potential recall to ensure it does not happen to the rest of us.

I believe the 458 model had quite a few fire issues, prior to a major recall.

Regardless, I agree it makes sense to keep a fire extinguisher in the ready, just in case.

    Horrible!

I would also be interested in knowing what caused the fire.

Sorry to hear about this and to see the heartbreaking photo. I'd also be interested to know what caused it. Seem to be an inordinate number of digital age supercars catching fire, and not only Ferraris. I find it very worrying. Best defense, I guess, is a fire extinguisher, but this shouldn't be happening.

Sorry to see this. It really is heartbraking to see the beautiful 612 engulfed in flames. I hope you and your son are ok and shopping for the replacement 612!
