I'm thinking that the new cars will have a very nice MR hydraulic clutch that can move between 0-100% transmitted torque and horsepower, killing the need for multiple clutches and simplifying the control of a paddle shifted transmission.

A patent search reveals that this is right on target, but 10 years behind the time that GM was granted a patent on this.

Very much looking forward to the new car.

I think he means a magnetorheological fluid clutch.

The viscosity of magnetorheological fluid varies under the influence of a magnetic field and can therefore be adjusted instantly and under computer control. This is the same stuff GM/Delphi uses in their adjustable dampers that Ferrari licensed for use in the 599 and other cars.

Very interesting. Besides the Delphi dampers that have now been licensed to Ferrari, Audi, and now Ford, Porsche uses MR fluid in their engine mounts on certain models. I imagine there must be other automotive applications on the horizon as well.

I think it is a huge technology. Likely to end up in clutches, limited slip differentials and transfer cases.

I wish I could get some of their shocks for aftermarket applications.
