So the story starts with my dad being a Ford mechanic/employee for 30yrs and his '70's Bronco. Anyway he gave me two sets of heads for the 302 and although they need a good cleaning I am curious about proper storage as I have never stored parts for any length of time. They will be stored in the house and not be subjected to the temp/humidity changes of the garage so I was wondering if I could just coat them with WD40 or some other protection before they go into a bag and/or storage bin?

    Thanks.

Whatever it takes to avoid serious rust. I doubt it will be a problem if stored indoors.

    WD40 will smell.

Good call as I had forgotten about the smell of WD40 which would be a huge issue when stored indoors. I am going to make a few calls to some of my mechanic friends and have them cleaned up. On the lighter side those dang heads are HEAVY but thankfully I had a cart to assist in the 50yrd trek from shed to trunk. One set is stock and the other set has had a valve job and a port & polish. I do not know all the details so I am relying on dad's recollection. I was also given a set of aftermarket roller rocker arms with hardware.

Next step, which I have had trouble with, is finding a 5.0 block yet I know they are out there in numbers. The plan is to have a solid and reliable platform for a turbo set-up but I am in no rush. Parts and turbo systems are 1/2 the cost of what I had to pay for my '92 MR2T.

    Good times!

Instead of WD40, use a purpose made engine fogging oil...it's cheap and made for the purpose of long term engine storage. Spray the heads down and put them each in a heavy duty plastic bag.

Use an oil and put it in one of those huge zip lock bags and suck the air out.

You could then place the bags in one of those Rubbermaid plastic containers with a lid.

The heads are now generously coated on every surface and every opening with STA-BIL' Engine Fogger, wrapped and will go into a Rubbermaid plastic container tomorrow. I have one that is long enough but it is currently storing other items and must be dug out, emptied and dusted off...baby steps. :D

Oh did I already mention how heavy those darn heads are? LOL
Thanks to Ted for leading me to the fogging solution.

This. Rust will live in fear of texasmr2.

After the heads are safely packaged up... just keep them with you at your mom's place. Maybe in the basement next to the Rolex.

    Simple!

Use T-9 Boesheild anytime you want to protect anything from corrosion. It's a paraffin wax coating developed for Boeing and it works awesome. Look it up.
