    Maybe Ford's cammer wasn't considered a prototype engine..?

    Maybe. But title of article didn't mention prototypes, just that they weren't sold in a car. The 427 SOHC was sold for racing, not sold in a car. Plus, the Weslake was raced. So would it be prototype if it was actually raced and not just run on a test stand? Splitting hairs at this point.
