well with all the discussion about who is gonna buy what where and how, do we trust the scources where we get our PPI's done, are they legitimate?

when i bought the glass car, PP was there as well, it all of about 30 minutes looking at the car and bingo, the gut fell kicks in and shake hands, its all done, sure i could have had an independent look at it, why bother, after seeing the condition of Black Stallion (which is immpecable) and after being brought up in the industry one just has that feel that its the right thing.

on the other hand if u get a PPI done by whoever, are they working for the vendor, or purchaser or working for the purchaser to get more work out of them..................interesting points.

rule 1: trust ur own gut feel
rule 2: if the shop floor looks like its got 12 years of grease there, stay away
    rule 3: trust no one
rule 4: take PP cos he can be trusted

i bought the urraco on the phone sight unseen, undescribed, and non goer.

it was a pig, and i knew it needed money spent on it.........but full resto.............oh well the car turned out better than new, now if i had a PPI from whoever, they would not have discovered anything other than it was fcuked..............

My brother is purchasing a toyota supra soon.. There are going to be so many bad examples out there.. I'd want a ppi, a compression test and a good drive of the car to see how it goes before i make any decisions.

back in 99, we (few dealers in adelaide) pulled a sting on the RAA (vic equiv RACV or NRMA)
we got a low km AU II Falcon with 11k on the dial and had a pre purchase inspection done and being ex govt it came up trumps, then a week later we swapped speedo's over and put in a 220k odometer reading and had the same pre purchase inspection done...........

guess what they canned the car saying it was not something to buy, even though it was the same car they based their decisions on the mileage..................

then we approached them and told them of the matter........they threatened to take us to court for tampering with a speedo.....WTF, and as i sit on the bar in the magistrates court as an assessor to the SA courts authority i came in and advised them that i would expose them (as being a recognized authority) and then hit the media........they backed away. I explained to them that we had done it to demonstrate their mechanics are hopeless.....................it worked

What about disconnecting a speedo, so mileage stays put?

    Bit of a grey area.

Not hard to believe that the RAA, RACV, NRMA etc inspectors are incompetent, but having a PPI done by a recognised and recommended marque expert is always cheap insurance.

I of course, don't follow my own advice! I know enough to know where the really expensive repair areas are and focus on that. Rust and incorrectly-repaired accident damage are my pet phobias. If you're looking at a Ferrari, you've got to spend time taking trim panels and inner guards off and go over every inch of the chassis with a strong light.

what would you say to an RACQ inspector finding significant rust in a car to make it unroadworthy but a specialist suggesting "may lead to significant rust" ?

which one do you believe ?

I still haven't heard back from VICroads about the roadworthy on my car

I guess the RACQ regard any perforation of any part of the chassis as a roadworthy failure, whereas the mechanic may have had the view that the rust was not structurally significant. Different states have different standards, its all symptomatic of an illogical system.

rust is rust and any rust on a chassis should be considered unsafe

    The RACQ are a joke.

I have many, many, many examples.

I once had a Pug 405 in for a PPI and they listed the cracking of the filler in the join where the roof meets the C pillar.(which they ALL have)

When questioned they said they thought the roof had been painted(it hadn't)

When questioned why the roof had been painted, they said it was probably hail!(it had NEVER been paintedl)

The only thing they are experts at is ****ing up a sale.

And worse than that, some of THEIR customers miss out on a good car due to their lack of knowledge.

The best PPI is from someone who knows the brand you are buying from experience, not a book.

It goes without saying there should be no conflict of interest with seller and mechanic.

and in morettis case i would say there was a direct conflict of interest because how could an exspurt miss vital items like rust, maybe cos there might have been a kick back in there somewhere, bit like weapons of mass destruction are there somewhere
