With all this talk of 599s, Veyrons and F430 Scuds I thought I’d let you in on our project to build something at the complete opposite end of the scale!

Myself, my brother (Ausdino) and 2 other mates are building 5 Clubman type cars. We are cutting and welding up the chassis’s, making moulds for all the body panels, sourcing all the mechanicals etc and building them under Ausdino’s house.

It amazes me that we can do this in today’s over regulated world and be able to register them to drive on the road.

They are going to be an absolute buzz to drive and as track day car will be cheap as chips to run and allow Horse to have a graceful retirement from the track.

Here are the first pics and, if anyone is interested, I’d be happy to put some up every week or so to show you how we are going.

Good stuff! I've always wanted to build up a little clubman with a Honda F20C (S2000 engine)....

I'm always keen to see build-up pics as I'm sure many here would.

What have you guys got planned for the heart?

Excellent.. they are soooo fun.. closest a car can get to the direct connection and exposure to elements, noise & awareness that a bike gives.

I take it you compared the various commercial put-it-together offerings? eg http://www.prbaustralia.com.au/ et al?

If I can ask.. what made you decide to build from absolute scratch? Any advantages? You'd have to meet the same regs as current engineered clubmans and same range of emission passed engine choices for example..

mate built a westfield and had no end of trouble with the engineering certificate ... but he was in Canberra at the time ...... should be easy to meet emissions with a modern engine but who is doing all the welding ?

I remember my mate saying the engineers were very careful about inspecting all the welds before passing the car chassis

Looks like fun, time consuming, but fun. Im keen to see your progress as you go, ive always wanted to build something like this, the 4ag motors suit it well, although the S2000 motor sound like fun aswell. Ive considered the use of maybe one of GMs LSx engines, plenty of go fast parts available, and torque on demand, but $$$ always make it difficult, good luck with it!!!!

Looking forward to seeing this come together.

Sitting behind the wheel of a car you've restored is one thing, but behind the wheel of something you built from scratch? That must be awesome.

I was under the strong impression the LSx approach only resulted in overpowered oversteery type.. which is fun but not necessarily fastest way A-B.

Talking with PRB guys year or so ago said even some modded and overpowered 4cyl made slower on-track machine with traction issues compared to just putting it down and boogying.

Fabbo! Who did the design and show us the drawings, please. I've always had a little thing in the back of my head that if I won the lotto I'd have a little 60's style open wheeler built (Fiat 850 engine!) as well as a 7/10ths scale Aprilia motorcycle (cause I can't get my feet on the ground with a real one!).

Will they be track only or can be registered in Vic. too?

    What powertrain you using, Corolla?

How much coin, might join in and make it a set of 6.But MUST be able to be registered, not interested in something i cannot drive on the road

I have a vacant factory we can use, [here in Vic] and also use of a brainey switched on guy who would be most useful for a project like this.I am sure we can work out some barter system etc

    Keep me in loop

    Ciao

lol.. fair enough.. a mate did that too from his garage in Orange.

He was pretty handy with tools what with being a mechanic with track vehicles on South Pole stations so has the "goods" lol.

He welded chassis from scratch and I drove the final outcome on the (bumpy) roads out that way and was a decent fun drive for sure!

Please keep us all posted with progress pics and lots of story!
