http://www.theage.com.au/world/live-updates-us--school-shooting-massacre-20121215-2bfx0.html I just don't get it. The pro gun people reckon it saves them from the criminals who can get a gun no matter what. That might be true, but unfortunately there are a lot of non criminals who seem to be killing our innocent non criminals. I'm happy to be enlightened if I'm wrong....but where else does this happen? I remember not long ago a guy went mad at a school in China...but he only had a knife and didn't do much damage! I wouldn't even know where to get a gun. Surely not having a gun at hand must save a lot of spontaneous killings.
0.012% of guns are responsible for violent crimes every year. Hardly a percentage that should cause even more gun control. Your chances are 350 times higher of dying from a heart attack than a gun shot. Kai
We don't like to use emotional arguments to restrict unalienable rights when the facts don't support it. Kai
How do you figure? A lunatic kills somebody? Only 0.012% of gun in the US are involved in killings. You want it to be zero? Kai
only sensible nations ban guns like we did after the Martin Bryant episode in Tasmania You need a damn good excuse to get a gun now
Gun control isn't the answer for the US, I don't know what is, but it isn't the law abiding citizen to which the problems lies. Besides it ain't going to change anytime soon. It's a constitutional right of theirs , something that isn't going to change, not in our lifetimes anyway. It's also a deeply engrained part of their culture. Believe me, being a Canadian much like you guys in the former colonies, we have strict gun control, it is hard to understand. Being an hours drive from the US border makes it even harder to fathom that such a difference in culture and ideology can be so close. We love our American brothers, and we share many things in common, but we don't share this one thing. The problem is much greater to be fixed with just stiffer gun control laws. It is a sad day and I'm sure most of the world is thinking the same thing, why not just ban the guns. If it were only that simple.
.............and even then you can't get the fully automatic weapons which have no place outside the military and law enforcement. Oh BTW, why sell bullet proof vests to the public? What idiot decided that was a reasonable thing for the public to own? No chance of anyone buying that here either.
We are touchy when emotional and fallacious arguments are introduced to justify additional restrictions on an inalienable basic right. We have a deficit problem, a debt problem, a leadership problem but not a 2nd amendment problem. Kai
I'm just waiting for the retribution to begin I've just put in my bit on silver.......... wait for it...
That's what I was thinking...do they search every section of FChat for references to gun control? How bazaar!
Actually guns aren't banned in Australia. There are just restrictions to what you can and can't buy. The only reason you can own a gun is hunting, security, target practice or sport. With pistols it's restricted to sport or security. Just under 1 million people own guns in Oz legally and of those guns only 0.002% account to gun crime. Usually because those weapons were stolen. If we look at the amount of people that have died from gun deaths even before the restrictions you see that we as a society aren't really that violent and the majority is just criminals being criminals. Now compare those stats to people that die from car accidents where speeding/drink driving is policed heavily. 2008: 225 2007: 404 2006: 229 2003: 287 2002: 293 2001: 326 2000: 324 1999: 347 1998: 312 1997: 428 1996: 516 1995: 470 1994: 516 1993: 513 1992: 608 1991: 618 1990: 595 1989: 549 1988: 674 1987: 694 1986: 677 1985: 682 1984: 675 1983: 644 1982: 689 1981: 618 1980: 687 1979: 685

Way more cars on the road now than in '79. And the number is falling due to better laws and safer cars. Imagine better laws on US gun controls. My goodness I've hit the jackpot!!!!
