Does anyone have a Magneti Marelli AEC 104B series ignition module spare, that is NOT working? (Boxer, 400i, Countach)

I'm wanting to have a go at fixing one. The issue being that the circuit is potted in epoxy resin which makes access almost impossible. The deal, you'll either get it back working and go around telling everyone what a genius I am, or, in a huge mess (Probably the latter).

Thanks for thinking of me, now please, have a look on your garage shelf and let me know if you find anything of interest!

I'm basically curious about the two T03 cased transistors on the LH side of the board and whether yours had failed. Looking at the design of the unit, I think there will be a thermal overload problem in that area as the unit is potted. Can you recall if yours had the RCA39578 or 2N3773?

Well, you're hardly a paragon in information. That looks like a freshly zinc passivated case with some generic internals, the give away being the flying leads coming out of it. Did you squeeze an MSD unit in there?

And what did you use to dissolve the potting?

Come on, answer the hard questions!

Like, did you rebuild the original unit!!??

    (It doesn't work does it??)

    (warming up an old thread)
So did you succeed in fixing it?

Both RCA39578 and 2N3773 were used depending on stock, you can still source 2N3773's for repairs. The potting is actually distributing the heat, also the unit is not getting that hot, so no worries about overheating.

Most common defects are one or both of the 2N3773s are gone, broken wiring in the transformer, RCA Darlington NPN failure, BSW39 failure. Less often also the thyristor can fail.
