The National Gallery of Victoria currently have a very interesting exhibition named "Shifting Gear." Well worth a look. Shifting Gear | NGV It celebrates the Australian car as an art and design icon. There's some great cars in the show and it's interesting to see some of the design sketches from the 1950s and 1960s on display. The Australian concept car, such as the Holden Hurricane and Torana GTR-X are on display. Since the 1970s however, Australian output in concept vehicles has been minimal at best, demonstrated by only two other vehicles present. There's also some fantastic Brabham MRD images and some engines on display. Of particular interest is the 4 Valve Repco Brabham engine with the diagonally opposed inlet and exhaust valves meaning such manifolding appears on both sides of the heads, fascinating! Some pics... I remember that GTR like it was yesterday. So futuristic looking back then that it seemed impossible.
Still 90 degrees. I think the cam drive arrangement makes it look wider than I assume it was. Unfortunately this idea was just silly and became the beginning of the end for Repco in F1. Think of all the extra weight, plus all the extra stuff sticking out into the air. The only possible advantage I can think of with this complex arrangement is that both inlets are different lengths, maybe spreading torque? ... but that could so easily been done by separately inlet runners but in line instead of opposite. Still it is good that people try these things as that is how we learn. Pete
It WAS yesterday !! TAA flight hostie : "Welcome to Brisbane, please set your watch back one hour and welcome to the Fifties"
oh yeah Apparently there are people in Sadelaide who think a 355GTS is a $400k+ car, ...... junkies !!
The red 55 Ausca was suprisingly good looking. The torana concept had a certain Italian style flair to it as well.
