Sorry this is a little off topic, but I'd like to raise a question/discussion about first cars in Australia!!

(Victorian P-Plate laws by the way)
    (-130kw/Ton)

Of course, unless under exemption, P-Platers can't drive Una Ferrari, unless it's a Dino😝

I'm just curious to those out there, especially Ferrari owners, what's a very tasteful first car for perhaps an 18 y.o?

What car have you purchased your children etc.. What was yours?

I'm curious because I'm in the process at the moment, the Golf is nice, I'd love Italian but Alfa just doesn't cut it!

    Thanks,

I hope people reply :) if not, sorry for making this post, I probably shouldn't be but I'm extremely curious!

Do you want a classic or something that works most of the time:)? What's the budget?

Mine was a beige '74 Galant. Auto, with roof racks and a tow bar! My grandfather passed it on to me.

I'd probably say maximum of $55K :) But it really does depend on a few factors (currently going through them now, range could increase or perhaps decrease). It's a first car at the end of the day, so it doesn't have to be too costly etc.

P.S: No Toyota 86/ Subaru BRZs please, every 18 year old with some well off parents must have those cars, they're so cliche and the interior is absolutely garbage (compared to a Golf, it truly is! :( )

Four years of Uni ahead of me, probably more practicality at the moment :)

$55k for a first car? The world is your oyster:). I have no idea on the kW limit but I would probably go something like a bmw or an Infiniti. The only ferrari in that price bracket of interest to me would be 400/412 which would be a fun choice.

I don't think my Dad would be keen on my first car being a 'Ferrari'!! Haha, if only :p

I'm thinking a lot about the Golf, it's just so hard to decide whether to get a normal one, an R-Line or a GTi. The price versus performance is so large, and the GTi is heavy overpriced, but it's so nice..

    Bloody dilemmas

There is no suitable Ferrari in that price bracket. The kid would end up walking to Uni as it would break down often and the repair bills would be so high that he wouldn't be able to afford a bus ticket :p

    +1.. Lmao

True! I couldn't imagine how people would act seeing a student having a Ferrari, I know it's an older one but still! There's a student at RMIT Bundoora with a 458 Speciale... If only 😍

I could imagine the repair and maintenance on a classic Ferrari... Plus, I don't think the one posted is actually P-Plate legal :(

I've thought about it, but the more I think, the more I don't want one...

    See, I'll always know it's not a Golf :(

The golf gti is always a good choice. Friends have had the golf 5, golf 6 gti and another has had the golf 5 r32 and they all enjoyed them. Funnily the one with the golf 5 r32 sold it pretty quickly as it wasn't entertaining enough. (I guess he expected too much from it for the price)

Does it have to be new or can it be second hand? How old are you willing to go?

I think my Dad wants to buy new (he has to buy two vehicles, one for the brother also). I suppose it can be second hand though, but it has to be just as safe as newer cars and all.

Renault Meganne hot version 2nd hand would be my choice. Then get a job on weekends to save for a 2nd hand Alfa 4C in a few years. Saw one at the FCA event on Sunday, gorgeous little thing.

I believe all RS Megannes are Banned!! :(

I was sort of considering one, but that happened.

All Clio RS models aren't banned though, but it's the same dilemma as the Polo vs. Golf.

P.S: I'd rather save my money for an AMG or Ferrari ;) The Alfa is very nice, maybe I'll change my mind soon? :D

Just my 2c but can I suggest something old and mechanical (clutch, no nanny aids etc) to really learn to drive (rather than modern day point- and-squirt) and that can be thrashed at motor khans etc to really develop your car handling skills. Then in a few years time when you get your modern Ferrari you'll really be able to handle and enjoy it.

Better off to have something modern with all the aids for road use from a safety perspective.
Learn the skills on go karts and through driver education courses on the track.
