Wife and I are planning traveling to Melbourne late March and early April for the F1 and vacation in the area.

Any suggested hotels in Melbourne area b4 and during the race? TIA.

Plenty of places to stay but all depending on your budget.
Stay somewhere in the city so that you're close to the action unless you intend on hiring a car.
I've stayed at the Inter continental which was really nice but a bit pricey.
Obviously during F1 period the prices skyrocket.
Last year I got last minute F1 tickets and stayed at the Jasper Hotel.
That was priced ok and was nice and clean.

it's a bit of a walk, but plenty of public transport available.

Thank you for the map and response.

Do you view the hotel to be a good location, or its it in a remote location with not much around the area? Been to Sydney a few times, but first time in Melbourne. Probably do two days specific for F1, 2 and 3 April, rest will be non F1 vacation time.

You'd certainly be in walking distance of everything worth seeing in the Melbourne CBD

Probably last two questions, pls. If two days (maybe 3) are for the race, are 3 additional days ample to enjoy Melbourne? Was thinking getting to Melbourne 29 March, leaving April 4 or 5th. With transportation, so good, in Melbourne, do I need a rental car too? Many thanks.

you can spend a few days or you can spend a few weeks. You know how it is.....there's lots to see and do, just like anywhere else.

Whilst public transport is great from the city to the track, I wouldn't rely on it solely to see the sights. I'd rent a car.

Thanks much guys. Very helpful. Reconfirmed some hunches, and provided an unbiased prospective. I now have hotel reservations, so will just work filling in the rest of the trip.
