The 456 is running well, but I'm not used to the noise the engine makes. Compared to this, my 430 is quiet. Is this normal for a V12?

Didn't you just remove a silencer and fit X pipes?

Yes mate, I did. But not being used to the engine, it makes a lot of rattles etc. It's probably just lifters, etc.

Agreed, it sounds amazing when its in the revs, but I'm not pushing it yet as I have a belt service etc. to be done yet.

It should not rattle. Howl and gowl yes, but not rattle. Get someone in Brisbane that has experience with V12s and take them for a drive to get their opinion. I would not drive it much before knowing it is OK, otherwise it might be very expensive.

The F116C engine series has old solid followers to start with as against hydraulic.

Shim clearance could be one area of noise but they tendency to close over time so a little noise is not necessary a bad thing.

My 456M is mechanically noisy but the sound is consistent and no prominent individual sound so I'm not fussed. When I had the PPI done there was no mention of the mechanical sound so I assumed its normal. They did pick the TUBI mufflers... now that's nice...

If you are concerned grab a stethoscope and have a listen around the engine internals. Still not convinced pop a valve cover and check the clearances.

Yes, I had Marc do the PPI for me and he didn't notice anything untoward either with the noisy engine. Compression across the board was very good. I'm probably just being paranoid. These engines are just a lot noisier than what I am used to.

As Graeme said, the 456 engine is the last with solid tappets - with 48 shims to get out of adjustment a little valve train noise is expected. I got all but 2 quiet. Certainly freshens up micrometer skills! That said, adjustment is easy, same as a Fiat TC - the Fiat tool can be used, I think.

The other source of mechanical noise is the oil pump drive chain, which doesn't have a proper tensioner. Slaps around when stretched. 550/575 have the same issue - easy to fix.

The engines aren't noisy, but they do sound busy - there is a lot of stuff going round and round, up and down.

Thanks Dave! Yes, both Graham and yourself have pretty much described what I am hearing. It's just that as a new ferrari owner, these noises are unusual to me. Marc Jones said the engine was fine. The power steering pump sounds excessively noisy though so I'll have Marc do something about that at the same time as the belts etc.

Gizzi, it's pretty easy to tell if there is a problem with these cars. Just take it around the block like the guy does in the video below, if you have the same result at the end then something is wrong

Just saw that youtube clip - it looks like the engine blew right at the end. Watched the next one on the making of the 456, and all I can say is... don't damage the bonnet
