Looking to carry a fire extinguisher in the car and interested in your suggestions on the best one to get and (hopefully not have to use :) ) here in Aust, as I am led to believe some can do nasty things to alloy components if sprayed on them?
    Cheers,
    Rob.

I don't think fire does great things to alloy either...

Coldfire is the best legal (Halon is better but illegal) fire extinguishing agent and is non-toxic.

Buy the bottles and refills from Motorsport Connections in Sydney.

    Fire Suppression Systems

btw the dry powder extinguishers that most people carry won't put out any sort of serious fire, particularly an oil fire. Also, they make a mess.

I keep a couple of these in the car. Small, no residue, no use by date.
My brother has them on is boat as well.
Not some hideous thing bolted to the bulkhead or under your seat.

    Fire Stryker

They look the goods! Might have to put one or two in my 348.

I have an ext in my boat already, but one or two more of these might be the go.

    Cheers mate.

Thanks for the replies fellas, yes the fire Stryker idea is a nifty one...

Our Kerrari is Captain Obvious sometimes :)

If you're going to carry an extinguisher, make sure you have one that actually works.

2 problems I see with the Stryker,
    1. a small volume of retardant and 2. in an oil fire, you usually can't see the base of the fire - there is thick black smoke everywhere.

My advice, fit the largest possible bottle that you can live with and practice using it. I've seen a car burst into flames and it was almost comical watching people struggle to work out how to even make their extinguishers squirt.

There wasn't much left of the car by the time the brigade arrived...

    +1

We do 6 monthly fire and first aid courses for work.

We learn all about the fire basics and we walk out of there thinking we are firemen.

We have to extinguish fires for practice also. You can tell whom are the first timers, they usually fumble and panic trying to put the fire out.

As anyone would do in an emergency situation. It's great having practice when they pay for the use of the extinguishers through work.

Perhaps enroll in a fire and first aid course, both are very very good and you will definitely learn something.

For the actual size of the Stryker, you could have four of the damn things, and still not take up the room that a normal extinguisher would, they also don't have a use by/replacement date, and there are 3 types for emission length, and rated for class A,B, and C fires and that covers oil and fuel.

Have you ever had to use one Murray ?

    Does it work well ?

I watched the video and the stream seems smallish for anything other than a tiny fire.

I have never used anything other than 50kg BCF for training in the RAAF so have know eye dear what current technology in fire extinguishers can do.

I've only had one fire under the bonnet of a car and was always taught NOT to open the bonnet, but to rev the engine to starve the fire, did this and the fire went out ..... this doesn't work all the time as the engine bay has to have an internal air filter, most Ferraris have an external input to the air filter but my old MGB was perfect for the information given :)

I currently run the following in the challenge (standard issue)

I haven't used one John and hopefully I never will.
They do say it is rated for the three classes of fire though, with three different run times. I would imagine that they cannot advertise that without the relevant authorities jumping all over them.
My brother saw them in action at a big boat show and as you know, fire on board a vessel is very serious and needs to be dealt with quickly or your feet get wet, and he was fairly impressed with the performance. The fact that they don't cover everything with powder and crap is a plus as well. The small normal extinguisher one I had in the 308 was "as good as new", then one day I checked the date on it, and thought..........crap has it been that long? Probably as useless as tits on a bull, so this product to me was a sensible progression.
To each his own I guess.

They are mate, check the tags as I am just wondering if it's still in date.

Last thing you want is driving around with it in your car all the time and one day having to use it and realizing that it doesn't work. Lol

If the alloy is that hot, then time to be well away from it and in the pub drowning your sorrows.
