Hi All I'm located in Sydney and new owner of 1992 Mondial T with Valeo clutch system, as I don't real know who to take it to, I have made few phone calls and no one seems to give a straight answer, I was hoping if anyone who might have similar type of car and able to direct me to Ferrari workshop who has SD1 and Valeo program to diagnose issue with hard gear selection, even if I have to ship it to Vic, QLD its ok,. Thank you, all in Advance Michael
Congrats on the Mondial mate. Any pics? Hopefully someone can point you in the right direction in regards to finding someone whom can work on it. Have you done a search for Mondial T Valeo issues? There is a wealth of information from long term Mondial owners in the Mondial section. They might be able to offer some advice or checks you can perform yourself in regards to the hard gear selection while you wait to have the car looked at by a professional. It could be something simple you can do yourself.
If I'm not mistaken, I seem to recall that the factory service bulletin from Ferrari HQ for valeos was to replace them with the 5 speed manual.
There is no difference in transmissions between the Valeo and the standard 5 speed unit in the Mondial T. The difference is in the clutch actuation only. There is an electro mechanical sensor on the gear selector which actuates the clutch. With only 2 Australian delivered Valeo Mondial T vehicles plus a nominal number worldwide you'll have your work cut out for you finding a motivated service person here. My advice would be to purchase the Valeo workshop manual (It's a supplement to the standard Mondial manual) and I start checking the electrical side first. It's not S.S. old car is it? Good luck.
The Valeo that was up here was serviced by Chris at John Cant's, but that was back in the dark old days. Here is a photo of it when John Cant was still alive ...... 17th January 2002 Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Carl , you are spot on , gear box clutch all same, just the valeo has ecu to plug into so able to diagnose and operate the system, sorry mate I didn't catch on ((It's not S.S. old car is it.)) Cheers Michael
Mate, it wouldn't surprise if that was the same car it looks identical, if you know anything about this car feel free to sent me private message if you like. Sorry to hear About john .. Cheers Michael
Hi Michael, was my car til I went up to nth QLD . I have spoken to you after you bought at auction. The problem is the sd1 does not work with the valeo as it is an ms dos system or so Keith minchen ex service manager of cants and euro marque told me a few years ago .it is an actuator driven clutch motor that depresses the clutch. If this is working correctly then I would suggest maybe your gear linkages may need attention as all it does is engage and disengage the clutch just like your foot and is matched to revs. I used to lose gears from time to time as the micro switches in the gear lever area were a bit unreliable due to age. There was a club member in sydney or maybe melbourne who ran a valeo as a wedding car he had a good knowledge of how they worked and some good fixes. He also had some instruction on how to recalibrate the ecu learning by a number of stop starts at various revs. I can not remember his name however someone on this forum will. I enjoyed it but hated the 'what's going to happen next" feeling every time I took her out so I was looking at turning her back into a standard manual. The cost .. About 5k would solve all these problems in the future as I also could find no one who knew what they were doing or who had the correct equipment. Chris at automotion Brisbane did some work for me he may be able to help My understanding is micro switch picks up movement in gear lever actuates clutch. Ecu picks up the revs and matches clutch movement to revs i.e. How fast or slow it releases. The clutch actuator is bolted to the bell housing and there is an adjustment screw for travel. The solenoidsare in the rear trunk behind the carpet at the top I think there are 5 ,1 for each gear. I think if you can get a manual and the ms dos floppy for the valeo you may do better or maybe a talented valeo truck shop mechanic may be able to help as this system was also used in Lancias and many trucks. Otherwise it is a bit of guess work and a black art, a bit like refrigeration . Hope this helps I gave you my number a year or so ago but pm me if you want any help.
Talking about this Mondi Tony? Maybe the micro switch failed on this one too. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's one of the cars used to do weddings back in the day in VIC. That accident was in a roof top shopping centre carpark. Accelerator stuck on apparently and the driver/owner crashed the car into the wall. Had the bride and groom in the back too, I think they all sustained some injuries but walked away. Maybe the Wife had broken some bones, I think. Going back nearly 10 years now this accident. The owner was trying to sell the business and two Mondials at the time from memory. I think this crash happened when I first joined the forum, so it would be around or just over 10 years ago. I also think 360C knew the owner or the car from some club runs?? Or it's his mate, can't remember 100%.
HI Tony Good to hear from you again, thanks for the info, if you have phone number for Chris at automotion Brisbane, it would be handy, Cheers Michael
Accelerator stuck... Don't you just turn off the ignition key. Melbourne mafia ..? Mob hit? Just joking turning off ignition would surely minimize damage plus foot on brake. You can see the wedding ribbons still hanging on the car.
You should dip the clutch, then kill the ignition. Unfortunately 99% of drivers panic and put all their effort into braking, but the engine of course is more powerful than the brakes.
Had it happen to me in the Esprit Turbo. Accelerating up to an intersection in second, was going to leave it in second, hit the brake and the car kept accelerating - horrible feeling. Both front wheels locked up with the car still under power. It probably took me a second to turn off the ignition, but seemed like forever. Idiot mechanic, now out of business.
hmm i think you might find the brakes can generate LOTS of hp.... Way more than that engine could dream of....
Find an empty road and test your theory.... then get back to us. In the days of slide injection, quite a few good drivers died in stuck throttle accidents. btw Anyone with an older Ferrari should renew the accelerator cable the minute it starts to fray.
I had a carby specialist fit a big double pump Holley to my '65 Mustang, out in the traffic it stuck open the first time I floored it. Very glad I had electronic ignition with a rev limiter, dipping the clutch was the only way to avoid rear ending someone.
