I understand that if I buy parts from overseas and have them sent to me they will attract various duty / taxes etc. (for values over $1000), but trying to find out exactly how much on the government websites is completely hopeless!

Is there a simple formula or somewhere I can go to work out what the total I would have to pay for any given value of parts?

    Thanks. :)

From memory it's 30% duty then 10% gst.

I also recall that the $1000 concession will be removed from 1 July.

Why should we pay duty when there is no longer a local industry to protect? So much for the US free trade agreement. ..

I paid this multiple times when I purchased 10 guitars from overseas over the last few years.

I don't remember for the life of me what it is, but I think you're right.

Removing it entirely? Good news! Wish it was removed 3 years ago, could have saved me thousands of dollars in import tax.

Sorry Pap, I think Ian means the concession is being removed, so you'll be paying GST on ALL imports.

It depends on what you are importing and what the package is labeled, i.e. Tyres, new or vintage parts or a "gift"

You will likely pay taxes if it is delivered via FedEx or DHL. Packages that end up being delivered via Aust Post seem to escape taxes more often than not in my experience

30 year old cars get an exemption. I've always imported bits labelled "vintage race car parts"

You must be using the same formula as a mechanic down in Mexico.
Duty on car parts is between 0% and 5% on landed price then add 10% GST on the lot.
A good old tax on a tax formula.

Thanks to everyone who has helped. This seems to be the correct answer.

    A rough formula would be

    a x 1.05 x 1.1 + a bit

Where "a" is the purchase price and "a bit" covers the final handling / clearance fee and is around $100-150.

So, for a part which has a purchase price of $5000 (including shipping), expect to pay around $6000 in total.

The final grey area seems to be "gifts".

For example, if my mate in London happens to buy a car part and then send it to me for my birthday as a gift because I'm a great guy, do I then still have to pay the taxes etc.?

The prevailing wisdom seems to think yes I would.

Just get him to send it via usual post, marked non commercial on the declaration with a value of $100 and it will get thru no problems

They guys at Australia post do not give a **** doing due diligence on these things. I bought 4 Porsche Fuchs wheels from the US last year via a well know parts place, 4 large boxes arrived at home via Aus post with not taxes paid. The seller (without me asking) had put a value of $20 for all four wheels. Ridiculous huh?

Just be sure you don't get shafted if the package goes missing and its only insured for the declared value, if insured its at all. Not sure if you can have a declared value of $100 and have it insured for $1000+, anyone?

In my experience buying alot from overseas - including Ricambi and Europsares orders in the 1000's I have only ever been hit with duty and GST once. Package was circa $1200, and I paid around $200 to have the goods released to me.

For the bigger items anything in a wooden crate that is not stamped as THE correct type of wood, will be subject to fumigation charges and disposal as well.
LCL (Less than a Container Load) for the more bulky stuff so you can share the costs is also worth looking into.
Your best friend will be your freight forwarding guy.

    Spot on.
I make and export a couple of things which are shipped in wooden crates. The wood has to be certified and stamped by a registered manufacturer with all the expected government paperwork involved. End result is the crates are stupidly expensive

If you don't do this then you will have all sorts of importation issues and holdups.

I'm surprised they're interested in crates being exported? I thought it was only incoming wood they were concerned about regarding pests.

They are only interested in applying copious amounts of KY gel, so you and I can pay as much as possible.
If you ever go and pick up goods from a terminal you will wait forever just to find a bloated forklift driver to get off his fat arse and load a truck.
And, you have NO recourse or alternative to try and speed things up.
Say anything and you will go to the back of the line.

He's talking about when the crates arrive at US customs, which is populated by the same "computer says no" apparatchiks as Aus.

Crates not appropriately stamped are returned to sender.
