    Hi guys,

As I will join you guys in Perth for the FCA Rally 2016, I need to buy proper clothes and helmet. Any recommendations? Where should I buy those? I searched eBay and found some nice driving suits, but I don't know which one to buy. Are the helmets the same ones used with motorcycles?

    Cheers,
    Gabriel.

I always used my motorcycle helmet.

Just make sure you buy one that's a pretty colour.

Gabe, all you NEED is a pair of jeans,a long sleeve shirt and an Aussie AS 1698 standard helmet.

Further to the above, unless you intend to do a bucket load of trackwork,it would be silly(in my view),to go and spend $$$$$$ on stuff you may only use sporadically.

If I were able to fly down and do all the club trackwork,I MAY consider buying "The Right Stuff",otherwise............................it's just a toss...IMO.

There IS the opinion of what to wear in the event of you car catching fire,in regards buying "The Right Stuff",I would suggest you have a talk to some of the seasoned track players to get their opinion.

I agree with Simon. As a complete novice I did my first two track events last year.

All I had to do was have jeans, long sleeve non-flammable top (cotton) and a helmet to the Aus standard (I had a motorbike helmet which was fine).

Given that I'll only ever do one or two track events per year I wouldn't bother with the expense of a suit etc.

I got a hero suit as I did some event which required hero suit approved attire, it's all a bit of a wank until the day something untoward happens and you wish you hadn't been such a bravado tosser.

Still, it is only lap dash

    That's what I was thinking.

All this talk of don't waste your money on a race suit if you are only going to use it once a year etc.

Just spend the dollars to buy a good race suit and helmet and you then have them both for the rest of your life sitting in the drawer whenever you need to use them.

Driving suit for a club track day = waste of time and money. In the unlikely event you're trapped in a burning car, you'll asphyxiate before you burn because (a) there aren't enough track marshals and (b) most of them have had no fire training. Forget about the silly little dry powder extinguishers they make you carry - they will hardly put out a cigarette, let alone a petrol or oil fire.

There is a real risk of roll over (just ask PP) so it's worth buying a good quality full face helmet. You get exactly what you pay for, the higher the cost the better the impact absorption, which might save you from a brain injury. You may as well get one with HANS anchor points too, just in case you do any real racing in the future.

The best safety investment you can make is driver training. If you've no track experience, a day (or two) with an instructor might save you from ending up in the wall and will definitely increase your enjoyment at the rally track day.

2nd best value investment - change your brake fluid just before the rally and make sure your tyres are less than 5 years old.

You guys are clueless cheapskates ;)

Gabe, ignore them. Spend the $$$ and get a proper red racing suit, Piloti boots preferably in red and a helmet with the colour scheme of your favourite Ferrari F1 driver. Your 360 deserves it

Just drive in your pajamas and ugg boots. Put on a stackhat and there you go. Don't forget a blinking red LED on the back of the stackhat for that F1 effect.
