I'm quite happy to provide generic information to assist the Australian Bureau of Statistics, however I feel this Census Form is an invasion of my privacy.

    1. Name?
    2. Whom do I work for?
    3. Employers address?
    4. Signature once completed

Oh well. Guess I won't be doing it tonight.
Can't get on to the website.

Fair dinkum, given how ludicrously large the public service is in this country it never ceases to amaze how they still **** everything up.

I loaded up and saved a few days ago - all except the last tick. [just in case we had a few guests who wanted to stay the night]
Went in a few minutes ago, ticked the last box and then submit.
Up came a receipt number - took all of 30 seconds.

Mine crashed on one of the last questions... Couldn't even save it.

I've been locked out for the last 6 hours.

    Yep. It's a ****ing joke.

How many people are employed on taxpayer money to do just this one thing, they've had five years to get it right and still it's crashing for every second person?!

I have no problem with the census but I'm strongly inclined now to simply not bother to do it.

Thank God the car / aircraft / boat etc. industry isn't as incompetent as the IT industry.

Otherwise we'd get this explanation on the new Boeing / Airbus: "Well, yeah sure every second aircraft has crashed, but it's the passengers fault!!"

From what I understand, you can actually blame IBM for this one - at least from a technical point of view.

Secondly, whoever did the estimates for numbers and times looks like they haven't factored all the reasons that the site access wouldn't be linear. Of course there were going to be periods when there were going to be massive surges.

Reminds me of a doco I watched once. It was about the UK power grid. Apparently when East Enders finished, there would be a spike of something like 3 gigawatts of power. This was all the people sticking their jug on for a nice cup of tea. They would actually have to put extra power stations online just to cope.

    Go figure.

Lol. But the thing is, they SHOULD KNOW this kind of crap.

Surely they should know that there'd be a massive spike on the evening of August 9?
Any idiot could have told them that.

If they are surprised by this and hadn't taken this obvious scenario into account, then what the **** do we pay them for?

Five years to think about this, and nobody thought this would happen?!

They expected the numbers, I just don't think they expected them at the times they happened. The site was working fine until about 6:30. From 6:30 onwards, apparently there were some errors beginning to occur. From about 7:30/8:00 onwards - things turned to absolute crap. I would expect that was when most people finished dinner, finished odd jobs around the house, got kids to bed etc. etc and then logged on.

So, effectively they 'outsource' the risk by engaging an external provider - from what I've seen tonight that provider was IBM to the tune of $10m.

I saw a lot of this when I was working at Defence. So many people had issues with making decisions because of the potential risk. Again - they would engage third parties to help mitigate that risk.

That was funny though, because even though they could point the finger at someone else when things went pair shaped, in my eyes, the blame still lay with the Department. They still paid a huge sum of money and were left with something that was substandard or didn't even work at all.

Let's just say, I'm glad I'm not involved in IT at the ABS. There's going to be some messy fans there in the morning.

Regardless of where the blame lies, I think my goldfish could have guessed that the vast majority of people would have set aside the early evening of the 9th to do it.

I am serious in that I really don't think I'll bother now. Let's see what happens.

lol. are you serious. The aviation industry wouldn't exist these days without the IT industry.

Damned if you'd be designing and building any new Boeing/Airbuses without it.

Not to mention all air traffic control being computerised/IT.

yeah, funny how people jump the gun and point the finger without even knowing what happened.

I'm suprised the Govts ethical hackers didn't pick this up in their SVP (stress, volume, performance) environment. Surely, they would have simulated numerous DDOS attacks.

They should have had a redirect to a page informing people the site was down and not to worry once they took it down. That was the mistake they made.
