Hi, Anyone knows a good panel beater . My aunts 450 SL was involved in an accident Image Unavailable, Please Login
Heck I don't know, looks pretty bent. Are they planning on replacing the bonnet and both front guards? What has happened underneath and to all the internal panels? I assume the front of the car will have to be completely stripped, ie. engine out, etc. Pete
Radiator is gone , bonnet and lights needs to be replaced . Not sure if the engine needs to be taken out . I personally don't believe the chassis is damaged .
Looking at the image, I doubt it could be properly repaired for $20,000. If you've been quoted $6,000 for a repair plus parts, I'd jump at it. (Curious why you wouldn't make an insurance claim)? The bonnet on a 107 is aluminium, it costs more than $6,000 to start with, good luck panel beating it. The parts will swamp the panel beating charge, add to that the correct Hella lamps at $1,200 per side, another say $2,000 in metalwork, another $2,000 in sundry parts such as fasteners, clips, mouldings, hood liner etc. plus paint. Not to mention the the bonnet. All the best!
Yes appears that way. So I'm confused because carl888 (unless he is self medicating again and should be ignored ) says the bonnet is aluminium and yet I can see what looks like rust ... ?? Pete
I have not been drinking today, but as it's a pre 1981 107, it will have a steel bonnet, not aluminium as I originally claimed. All 107s from 1981 have an alloy bonnet and bootlid. The headrests with the "Ears" suggest the car is 1979 or earlier. Has a later 500 SL chin spoiler fitted. Looking at the writing on the windscreen, you sure it didn't come from Aunty Auction as opposed to Aunty?
She bought it from pickles auction and the previous owner was our Friend . She assumed it was an easy fix .
Around 3 Mths mate, we might be sending the car to Melbourne to get it sorted as we have some good friends there with parts.
You are spot on mate . It's a 1977 car and bonnet , radiator , bumper. Reds to be replaced with the 2 front lights . Car starts but i would not drive it .
If interrested there is a 78 here for sale. Identical color. Absolutely mint. Original paint in perfect condition. Asking $25k cdn. Both tops.
She always wanted one and she is in her late 60s. We got the parts from the UK and landed cost us 2k aud by vessel. It's the panel beating / New interior and minor things that I am afraid off. I believe this cars would go up in value in the next 5 years or so.
Hey Mate, Do you spares that I am buy off you ? For now, I guess she is stucked with this car for a bit.
Ok, that's fair enough if she always wanted one. If that was the case, she probably should have purchased a good used one. I wouldn't like to try and fix a 40 year old Merc, would be a nightmare IMO. Thanks for sharing though, I hope your Aunty gets it back on the road in no time so she can enjoy it.
Thanks Mate, We are gonna be shipping it to singapore to get the work done , New paint and interior :
We would be rebuilding the entire car 🚗. Might as well as it it only 3 k to ship up and down . Freight prices have dropped tremendously Mate ,so it makes economic sense atleast to me .
Would it be better to buy that mint condition car in the Canada and swap parts over?? $25K Canadian? Surely be cheaper than rebuilding the entire car? Or has it gone from a $6K front end smash repair to a $60K restoration now? Still hard for me to get my head around it all. Sounds like this exact car is VERY VERY special to your Aunty.
We would probably spend around 8k in Singapore for panel Beating / paint / sand blasting / parts versus 6k just for panel beating without parts. Car should be shipping out next week.
