Hi Folks - My wife and I will be visiting Sydney for a few days in early January. First time visitors. We'll be staying near the Opera House/Botanical Gardens area. Any tips on things to see and particularly nice places to eat? We usually throw in a 3-star Michelin restaurant as part of our dining plans, though we may be out of luck on reservations at this late date. Thanks!
These three restaurants are in the area you are staying in with the first located in the Opera House. All are fine dining with excellent food, service and views. They are very popular so you might find it hard getting a table. Go to all three if you can, classic Sydney experience http://www.bennelong.com.au http://www.ariarestaurant.com/sydney/ http://cafesydney.com Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
also take a ferry (from Circular Quay, right by the Opera House) to Watsons Bay and have fish & chips (fries) at Doyles On The Beach. Very popular on weekends, so arrive early. Not at all fine dining, but a great Sydney experience. You can swim there too
The Bridge walk is worth a thought, even if you can't book just the street level walk to Milsons point is good value (free) and The Deck at Luna Park is good spot for a drink/meal The Deck Sydney - Luna Park
The first thing I want to see when in Melbourne is the roads heading north to Sydney Mind you, the people in Melbourne are far nicer than the Sydney people ..... and I'm a Sydney person !!
If you head out to Bondi one day then book in for a meal at Icebergs Dining room Decent food with postcard views Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm flying to Syd in the morning - any locals have a good tip for where to watch the start of the yacht race on Mon morning? I understand South Head is the go, but anyone know any 'secret' ie less crowded spots?
Enjoy the flight and don't bother bring warm clothes it's going to be a classic Aussie Christmas..hot.
The crowds are unavoidable - use public transport to get to Watson's Bay early and expect a long queue to get in and out of that area. The Gap will provide you with a vantage point of the yachts on the harbour and also heading south after they leave the heads.
Rent a scooter if possible, and it will get you to your destination far quicker than traditional methods. Traffic in Sydney is a nightmare. Since you're a foreigner, you wont be bothered by any fines you may get. Note traffic filtering (under 30kph) is legal, but lane splitting (30kph+) is not. Have a quick read to familiarise yourself, but in a nutshell, it will save you a ton of time, and as a tourist, that is your most precious commodity. Also get maps updated on your smartphone if necessary, and use your hands free earpiece. Good luck, and enjoy.
^^******* Traffic in January is not a problem as the schools are still on holidays. Even less of a problem if you are staying in the city Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What a cracker of a day- thanks to DMWC suggestion I took the ferry to Watson's Bay, quick swim in the ocean (suffering withdrawal after 3 days of no salt water) then coffee and brunch at gorgeous Dunbar House (pic looking out towards the park) then walk up to South Head for excellent view of the yachts on a perfect summer day... Doesn't get better ( or more Aussie) than this! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Glad to read that you had a great day The ferry trip to Watson's Bay and also Manly is such a great way to see some of the scenic parts of Sydney. Some of the ferries serve alcohol or you can just bring a hip flask of Single Malt.
G'day Yin, you should hit up Fort Denison in the middle of the harbour for a meal, it's not 'fine dining' but it is very good food, and the view is nothing short of incredible. Fort Denison - Home alll the details there. Also hit up this bar for high rise views of the harbour in the evening Blu Bar on 36 | Shangri-La Hotel Sydney Hope you enjoy our country
