Whilst I do not need to be told that they are illegal, what are the thoughts on the radar detectors currently most effective in Oz?

FYI: most Highway Patrol cars have radar detector detectors - oddly enough most often made by the companies that make the detectorJohn

At an FCA lunch run a couple of years ago, an owner had left his "undetectable" detector switched on while we parked for a coffee break.

HWP car comes buy, obviously looking for something, went straight to his car. Big fine and lots of points gone.

Fine is I believe $3000.00, sadly lots of new cars have radar cruise control, not sure how that works or is accepted.

They are still legal in Western Australia so the majority of models sold in WA don't need to be hidden.

In NSW the fine is $1500 plus 9 points and another $1500 if you don't hand over the detector on the spot

A much cheaper solution is not running plates, only $400 3 point fine  If you do a runner then it's free :D

My advice is to visit radar forums to get the latest information, they have Australian sections too

Good mate of mine had one and got done just inside the QLD border. He was very co-operative and handed it over immediately etc. Went to court with a big pile of character references and what not. Got a fine in the order of $2k and no conviction. Apparently a criminal offence rather than just a traffic violation up here.

I had one in my M3 which was all hard wired. It was an import from NZ where they are legal. I used it occasionally, but was always paranoid I was going to get into trouble. Super sensitive, it would go off way before you came up to the speed camera. Also automatic doors would set it off too.

Just about everything in Qld is Laser now, including cameras. Only the mobile ones on the cop cars still use K band radar, I think. The cameras use Poliscan, which gives them the ability to sweep several lanes and book each one separately. The good news is it sprays laser everywhere, and can be detected way before the photo zone (if shooting from the front)

Aus Police sure have a huge obsession with anything speed related.

I remember not so long ago when I was in the job (just over ten years ago), we preferred to spend our times going after drug dealers, burglars, people who bashed other people for money, rapists etc, and would only book someone for speeding if they were being reckless and/or driving like an arse, and not for just straying a few kmh/mph over the limit, because believe it or not, (based on my experience anyway) doing 67 in a 60 doesn't cause everyone around to suddenly start dying

I had a mate who was a copper. I asked him when he was going to Traffic Branch. He said "I haven't f****d up that badly yet".

I had exactly the same problem, everytime I drove past a service station or a 7-11 the automatic doors would set it off.

Also some car windscreens have metallic material embedded in them to reduce heat, and that can stop them working alltogether.

I know of one very cleaver hidden unit that is when switched on appears from the number plate mounted box and retracts when off and the case its mounted in is shielded.
He says it works very well and has had no issues at all and has paid for its self numerous times.

NSW police have the power to impound and dismantle a car if they suspect a hidden detector is fitted. They have no liability for the cost or effort of reassembly, even if no detector is found.

I've looked into all of this, decided that it just makes more sense to not be over the automatic loss of license threshold. You can still have an entertaining drive on this basis, particularly on windy roads. If you want to go flat out, go to a track day.

Perhaps living in the bush changes the equation, but in major cities you are nuts to speed.
