UPDATE [12:37]: Tuoi Tre, a leading daily in Vietnam, reports that the Vietnamese Navy has confirmed the plane crashed into the ocean. According to Navy Admiral Ngo Van Phat, Commander of the Region 5, military radar recorded that the plane crashed into the sea at a location 153 miles South of Phu Quoc island. :-(
I am truly saddened that what has been feared has happened. My thoughts to all of those affected by this tragedy. May we learn so it will never happen again.

Unless it happened too fast.. Wasn't there some (minor) cracking issues in 777s? Prayers to those families, just terrible.
My father, who was serving in the Malaysian Air Force for over 20 years said he's really baffled why there's no Mayday call, should there be an emergency, crash, etc. At 35,000 feet, it would take a couple of minutes, should the plane crash. However, what's weird, it's just like it's vanished, no contact, no radar detection... I don't want to start rumours, but one of the only possible explanation, if there was a bomb on board. However, it can't be as there's no traces of debris, etc. Everyone here is just down today, as it's the first time i believe it's happened to a MAS carrier.
sorry Remy if it was terrorism I think someone would have claimed responsibility by now, especially given it's apparent "success" (we're now 18 hours after the plane's last contact). my suspicion is a massive structural failure, although it must have been really big for pilots to not have time to send a distress signal.
A side question. I've got boats and all of them have EPIRB's that put an immediate signal out if they hit the water. I'm a little surprised that the location of the plane is determined by a last radar contact at a high altitude and high speed. The next step is to look for debris. I'm not a pilot so I may be missing something. It seems like there would be a beacon on board.
