Thought this may be a fun thread. I see all sorts of things here and there and thus thought we should have a place to put em up......

Cool! I see nothing but the regular planes so sadly I won't be contributing much.

Another nerdy thing I do is spend hours on google maps looking at air bases around the world to see whats hiding around the runways/hangars.

This is Mehrabad International airport in Iran. These planes should look a bit familiar. Some of our old F14s......

    Very cool.

I have just completed my first model kit since a kid and it was this very plane which I wanted to study.

I hope to get to the seaplane base at Oshkosh this year.. hope if I do there's one there can see in real life for first time.

Both are very cool. Is that a P-51 in the hangar behind the Stearman?

If it is an original one it probably has the BMW 801. If it is a replica - probably built by Flug Werk in Germany - it has the Soviet design 14 cylinder twin radial built in China which is close enough to the original design.

So is it real or replica?

    FWIW...

BMW purchased a license to build Pratt & Whitney radials in the 30's.

BMW improved on the P&W design, resulting eventually in the BMW 801 radial.

It had a cooling fan in front of the engine, inside a fairly tight cowl to aid engine cooling.

Later versions of the FW-190 had watercooled Junkers inverted V-12 engines, with a thinner cowl.

Paul Allen's museum FW-190 is totally original including the BMW 801. The airplane was built as an interceptor and bomber killer so it was designed to manage sustained high rate of climbs.

Bob- Many of the surviving FW-190s are A-8 models, which were optimized for ground attack. They had war emergency power fluid injection, thicker armor, and 30 mm wing cannon. A later version had even heavier armor. They were still used to attack US bomber formations.
