I didn't see a thread like this before so I figured I would start one. From what I see I am not alone here either tracking flights and/or flight incidents.

Not sure who knows but I use Aviation Herald to see what is going on in the world and you can see a lot of incidents.

    The Aviation Herald

No affiliation with the website. Does anyone use a different website to track such items?

I use flightaware and flight24 to track some flights.

A bird as big as the 747 can easily do a barrel roll at those slow of speeds and never lose more altitude in the process than an altitude drop during normal descent for landing. ;)

Considering that 90% of action films in the theaters today are done with CGI, I doubt that it is real.

It is actually a slow roll and it is absolutely positively not real.

I would think a 747 could do a standard aileron roll but there is no way it could perform a slow roll.

Difference being the movement of the nose during the roll. A slow roll it doesn't move for an aileron roll the nose is pulled up before the roll begins.

even an Extra 300 dedicated aerobatic airplane has the rudder at ir limits to hold the nose level for a slow roll, And it doesn't gross at a million pounds.

Absolutely correct! There is no way that a 747 could roll on a point without tremendous negative loads on the systems. The constant speed drives and fuel systems would be compromised . The structure would probably be okay but pushed to limits. The 707 prototype ate up about 500 to 800 feet of altitude when it did the aileron roll over Lake Washington and to do it Tex Johnston pulled up at 35 degrees and climbed before he started it and maintained 1G all the way around..

In this interview he calls it a "chandelle".

I thought a chandelle finished with the plane going in the opposite heading than the start?

You are correct. I don't know why he said chandelle because he actually performed an aileron roll. I was there and I saw both rolls, the first going north and the second going south. In each case, the altitude gained before the roll was lost during the roll and the airplane finished where it started.

A G-IV exploded upon take-off in Mass last night killing seven, including a co-owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Lew Katz. News reports unclear as to whether it exploded in-air or upon crashing.

Did you have any idea beforehand what he was going to do?
That must have been incredible to see!!!

Maybe since that day he was always wondering if he could have done a chandelle... and it just slipped out :)

    Terrible. :(

Apparently the aircraft failed to become airborne as it was attempting takeoff at Hanscom Field outside of Boston. No report yet on whether the flight data recorder has been found yet.

Nobody but the flight test crew knew what Tex was going to do. I knew the flight engineer and he said that he never felt any negative loads, 1G all the way around. He took the picture that was posted.

Updated story with photos, some rather graphic:

Wreckage of private jet that killed Lewis Katz and 6 others revealed | Mail Online

If I were to guess, the slats & flaps may not have been set properly for takeoff.

GIV doesn't have slats. Flaps were set correctly.

Whatever the issue, they decided to abort way past V1, and way past VR, and, sadly, you see the result.

Interestingly, Gulfstream apparently requires an elevator check at 60 knots, to ensure that there is elevator effectiveness. I don't know if these guys did that, however.

No matter what the cause, very unfortunate. RIP.

"The private jet that crashed outside Boston Saturday reached 190mph, but never lifted off the ground, according to data from the plane's black box.

The flight data recorder also indicates that the pilot tried to brake and reverse the thrusters before the fiery accident that killed billionaire Lewis Katz and six others. Tire skid marks were also found on the runway leading up to the crash site.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board said it's not yet clear why the pilot tried to slow the Gulfstream IV before takeoff at Hanscom Field.

Information retrieved from the Gulfstream IV's cockpit voice recorder picked up a conversation between the pilot and co-pilot of the about an aircraft control issue, Schiada said, but he would not elaborate and stressed that investigators had not yet determined the cause of the crash."
