A little low level and mild acro. No, not in the 747. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7TwsOl39Z4&list=UUQMtvtuTvEqJGz7YMELesJg]Low Level and Light Acro - YouTube[/ame]
Lou- Very nice. Low level overwater is fun as long as you can avoid seagulls. Was that one of the Catalinas?
Yeah, Catalina Island itself. About 26 miles off the coast. Seagulls can be a problem. I keep my eyes wide open.
We WILL NOT be doing that in the Cessna thank you very much.... you're nuts.... But very cool to watch
Thanks for the nice comments. Yeah, I keep an eye out for seagulls. There actually aren't too many out there. I try to fly under them (kidding). I put my cell phone in a ziplock bag and have 121.5 up for the flight across and while out there. Damian, the GoPro makes it look a little crazier than it is. I was flying and filming. That one area was a little bumpy, which made the camera bounce around and added to the effect. I can't imagine 480 kts on the deck! Flight was out if Long Beach.
Lou- You would actually love mach 1.1 at 100' AGL. 480 knots was just a peacetime low level speed to keep the noise down.
I'd much rather pay $50k to do the mach 1 at 100' AGL than pay $250k for a short ride to space..... Maybe the govt could auction off low level thrill rides to raise some $$ for the military, and keep the pilots fying planes instead of desks!
I would too! I was reviewing VFR charts online just to make sure flying low around Catalina is legal. As you can see, some of the Channel Islands are marine sanctuaries and low flight (below 2000 in some cases, 1000 in others) is prohibited. I don't see anything mentioned for Catalina. So I'm assuming the standard 500 AGL over sparsely populated areas, as low as you want as long as you're more than 2000 ft horizontally from them. I don't fly over boats low. I either climb or go around them. Anyways, while online I saw mention of Bald Eagle nests on Catalina. The nesting sights have live webcams. Interestingly, I found a cam pointing out towards the west. I decided to go back through the footage to the approximate time I flew by. Ok, I'm in Narita and it's raining now, so I'm more than a little bored. Well, looks like the Eagle Cam caught an Eagle! This one full of feathers, not bald. I guess you can't go anywhere without being caught on video nowadays! Eagle Chat? Haven't heard of that one. Can't wait to hear what they're saying. Reckless? Giving biplane pilots a bad name?
Did another low level run. I'm front seat on this one, doing a little flying, but mostly video duty. Cameras on the upper wing, tailwheel, and in the cockpit. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmBo6hUo2Bg[/ame]
Great video! Still...makes me really nervous watching two guys looking inside the turn at the same time at what, 50-100 feet? When I flew for the RAF we could fly down to 100 feet at 420+ and I'll tell you, my eyes were straight out the front when I was that low...I don't think I'd blink either! When I had to look at a wingman in tactical, I'd always pop the nose up and look while climbing then dump after I acquired him. Time to impact with just a couple of degrees nose low is just a couple seconds... Love the Channel Islands and the views you've given us! Just be careful...nobody's dying that you need to do this... Best, Hannibal
