I know the 747 is still one of the fastest in the sky but last week coming back from Orlando MCO to MAN in the UK. The ground speed displayed on the sky map went up to 728mph. I fly quite a lot and that is a good few MPH than I've seen before.
We were obviously in a jet stream with a big tail wind but I'd be interested from a pilots view if that is unusual. The total flight time was also just under 7 hours. A good 30 mins quicker that I've ever flown the route before.

It doesn't seem that unusual..... Crossing the Atlantic I have seen 160 knots of tail wind. Somewhere I have a pic of the instrument display from that flight showing airspeed, wind and ground speed.

My max is 752 kts. That's 865 mph. Pushed the plane up to .91 to get that. TAS was 539kts with a tailwind of 213. I've seen winds up to 225, but never had them straight off the tail.

The coast off Japan seems to have the strongest winds I've seen.

To get the 728 mph you got, the tailwind was around 150 kts, not too shabby!

I've been there. I came back from Osaka to London a couple of years back and the flight time was a couple of hours longer than I'd done it before. I forgot what the GS was but it was in the high 400's for much of the flight :(

Yeah, I believe we were seeing around 715 kts or so at mach .84. So wanted to see just how high we could get it. Mach .91 yielded 752 kts. Last year I had over 700 a few times, but nowhere near 752. It's almost that time of year again. I'll post if I see anything over 700.

As a general aviation enthusiast, not a pilot, I really enjoy reading the details that some of you post. If I ever see the last post in the aviation by Lou I check the thread, thanks for your posts and clips!

I'm also tracking the antonov cargo plane as it is heading to Toronto, can't miss that!

Back in 1990 I flew a BA 747 on a day flight from JFK to LHR. The pilot told us the flight would be a bit rough throughout because of a 150 knot tailwind, and indeed the entire flight was like riding on a cobblestone road. We arrived over London an hour ahead of schedule but had to hold for 40 minutes because Heathrow wasn't ready for us yet!

Be careful, the chief pilot may see the data and give you the fuel bill!

PureEuroM3 and mike01606, thanks for the nice comments.

Rcallahan, I was the chief pilot at the time, but hear what you're saying!
