    The Lockheed Speedpack fitted to the belly of a Constellation. I'm sure some of our old-timers will be familiar with this, but I'd never seen or heard of anything like it before.

    There's more info to be had around the web. Looking at it more closely I'm surprised the wheels of the boat don't retract fully to improve aerodynamics.

    Seen many pics of them... never seen them loaded, though.

    They had them for DC-7's also.

    I think that the small amount of drag from those tiny wheels would be more than offset by the added weight and bulk of a retraction mechanism.
