My brother sent me this LiveLeak.com - Highly unusual touch-and-go After owning an Aerostar for many years (sold it about 8 years ago) I really can't believe this guy survived. I used to come over the numbers around 115 kts and even with full props, not bent ones. The Aerostar is a terrible airplane once it gets slow, it just doesn't want to accelerate.
Absolutely crazy decision. He knew he'd suffered prop strikes and already scraped the bottom. What was he trying to save by taking off? I think hubris overtook rationality. Or maybe he just freaked out. Either way, he probably shouldn't be flying anymore. He was very close to stalling on the climb out. It's for sale! 1970 Aerostar 601 Aircraft for sale - Aero Star Usa Ltd , FL - Trade-A-Plane Inventory ID 2076612 The ad says "...needs props.." Ya think? And maybe a couple of engine rebuilds, along with a few other things? Image Unavailable, Please Login
You'd assume so very soon afterwards!.. only perhaps with this very fresh in his mind put down the wheels this time..
Had to be. It's not like he had a lot of time to consider options. Bad conditioned response. Lucky it didn't turn into a fatal. Good thing it is for sale. Decision making like that is an accident waiting to happen.
I'm never going to complain about my landings again.....Of course its hard to forget to put the gear down on a 172
forgot to verify for 3 green after lowering gear switch... few A star drivers have been known to pull the gear breaker ... to disconnect the hour meter... then forget to reset the breaker
My guess is this dude has a habit of making $h!tty landings and has to go around from a few of those. The crunchies he experienced just made him do what he always does...power up and go around (or crunch n go, in this case). This is a pretty classic example of Negative Transfer.
True dat.....but I haven't flown one of those yet... I still cant believe that thing was able to go around with the prop's bent like that...Less than optimal climb performance one would suspect...
I can't believe the nacelles and wings didn't come apart with the props that out of balance. I would be very suspicious of that entire airframe after that.
Go around? He didn't go around, the numbskull went home. Not familiar with the area but maybe 100 miles? Over densely populated coast of FL.
