As part of the festivities and events leading up to Liberation Day (5 May) here in Holland, there was a flyover of The Hague (and other cities?) in Holland in remembrance of Operation Manna. We were treated to seeing on of the two flying Lancaster Bombers left in the world and a Spitfire fighter escort circle The Hague Centre. The sound coming from the bomber was amazing! Sorry, I didn't think to take video but here's a picture of each. From our apartment balcony, they weren't much higher up than we were :D

    Very cool...

I've heard that the Lancaster sounds like 4 Spits flying in formation...

I'll be headed to VE day(May 8) in Washington DC for the fly over. Hope it's worth sneaking out of work for 3 hours.

When all 4 engines are in sync the Lancaster sounds like a big hairy Merlin with a nice voice. They have a unique and lovely song at cruise. My favorites are the R-2800 in an F8-F and and a Merlin in a Hurricane, Spitfire, and a Mossy. The FW-190 ain't bad either with an original BMW engine. A B-25 with straight stacks is not only nice to the ear but a treat to the eyes at night on take off.
