Its being reported as a catastrophic engine failure...sure looks the fire took hold quickly.

What would of happened if it had occurred after rotation ?? doesn't look the engines own fire suppression system could deal with it ??? Scary

 

I'm really surprised they had the slides deployed on the side of the aircraft that was on fire like this.

Probably deployed before the big flame. I was reading everyone got off safelt so good job to the crew.

Kinda curious if it chucked a turbine blade through some fuel or hydraulic lines?

 

A fire like that would have to be from a severed fuel line. Lots of flame, lots of black smoke.

 

Thank heavens they haven't taken off...

 

Catastrophic engine failure is what is being reported over here.
RR says it wasn't one of theirs.

On a serious note it's good to see from many of the pics that much of the carry on luggage got off safely. Absolutely shameful behaviour 👎

This doesn't look good.... You think the plane is a write off? Makes me wonder if the "engine trouble" was caused by the fire. As in the engine spooled back after control wires were burned through.

No kidding, that's terrible. That said, I'm glad everyone got out ok.

 

Interesting picture. Makes you wonder whether it was one of the air pacs that caught fire. Depending on ground ops they could have been under heavy use with very little cooling air flow prior to and during taxi.

The burned area shown is the aft end of the fwd cargo hold and forward of the Air Conditioning Bay. ..and just forward of the center section tank, that was full of fuel. The number one engine inlet cowl is just visible in the left frame of the photo. I might be wrong but that's my impression. Looking at it again, the burned out area is near the Mix Bay forward of the front spar. The air conditioning packs are aft and under the wing. To my knowledge, there are no fuel lines in the burned area unless there was a long range tank or something similar. Everyone is saying engine burst so I suppose that could have thrown a hot blade into the fuselage.

Some passengers reported hearing 2 "bangs". It's possible the engine went first and then the fuel started to burn from the fuel tank.

What's amazing is that this happened when they were still able to abort a take off. It's hard to imagine a similary outcome if they were in the air.

 

The pilot, Chris Henkey, is due to retire next week so a hair-raising few moments for him on one of his last scheduled flights for BA.

Looks as if the engine pod failed to contain engine parts after the engine disintegrated. RR say it is not one of their engines.

Delivered to BA in January 1999.

Has GE90-85B's.

 

It was a bit unfortunate for BA that the problem obviously occurred on the inboard side of the engine; if it had been on the outboard side, I could see a possibility of the aircraft having been salvageable.

So now BA has lost 2 777s due to engine-related issues with two different makes of engines!

I can see a scenario of all GE90-powered aircraft being grounded temporarily until more is known.....

 

More dangerous on the ground IMO. Inflight fires usually extinguish themselves when you kill the fuel source. Of course, we're talking about Brittish pilots here. Dangerous no matter what...
