About an hour ago while in cruise flight, an airline pilot friend of mine witnessed a rocket go by him in Colorado. It was flying horizontally and then pitched up. Heading west. He could see stages separate. ATC seemed to know nothing about it. Other aircraft were diverting to avoid it. He's seen rocket launches off the west coast and says this was different.

    Thoughts?

How could ATC not know anything of it? They MUST have seen something on radar!

"A mysterious light that streaked across San Diego’s night sky Saturday, visible as far away as Nevada and Arizona, was a Trident missile test-fired by the Navy."

BUT, no comment on what happened in Colorado!

Apparently I got some details wrong. My friends flight didn't divert. But others on the frequency did. ATC thought it came out if the SLC area. He was over CO and it was at his 9 o'clock. Not launched from west coast according to my friend.

    It was pretty big
    Weird yellow glow
    Wasn't from west coast
It looked like a giant comet
    Initial altitude 40k ish
    Strangest thing I've seen
Not sure why they would say west coast launch

I didnt think SRBs were white until they were at really high altitude. All of them I've seen at low altitude were orange/yellow.

Isn't it possible that there were two launches-- the Navy launch on the west coast, and the Colorado rocket club in Colorado?

My first and only UFO report was enroute form SLC to VNY circa 1997 at night. We made the report...Two bright lights changing shape about 20 degrees over the west horizon. It put off light like a full moon only triangular in shape. ATC asked us to repeat the sighting. Then silence. That was a real career flash back, but my CP and I were young etc. Thankfully about 20 seconds later, an American, Delta and America West crew confirmed the sighting......chickens hahah.

We got a hand off to LA center but monitored the previous freq on #2. It was a dual Intercontinental Missal launch out of Vanderberg AFB.

    Gotta love the job.

It is now Sunday, November 8, 2015, and not even Drudge is reporting any launch other than the California one, though reports of sightings (of the single launch) are said to have come from a wide area, e.g.:

    Missile test?

Seen all the way out in Puerto Rico and Louisiana. That's some interesting line-of-sight factors.

They have a new bird in the black arena. Missile, other, take your pick...

The second to last GPS IIF was recently launched out of CCAFS, too. Makes for quite a show on the eastern seaboard and the track passes over the Caribbean.

I watched the evening Trident from my balcony looking west just north of Vandenberg on the central California coast. We see a lot of launches going up from the facilities at Vandenberg, but this was odd in that it seemed to going north along the coast before some sort of second stage kicked in and it went vertical. It was awe inspiring to think that it came from the USS Kentucky, a ballistic missile submarine. At the time we did not know what it was, but my neighbor joked "and then the world ended". I read that it was part of a week long series of tests.

One of the must unusual sights I've ever seen! This iPhone photo taken at Willow Springs Raceway, near Lancaster, CA. The larger diffused light area kept expanding until it extended from the horizon to about 45º
elevation... The missile seems to be angling up at this point and perhaps the flash of light at the tip is a stage separation...
