    Hot off the press and one of my best. Hard to imagine that the Army Air Force painted their airplanes like this but they did. A P-26 of the 95th Aero.

    I always wondered if an Air Corps General in the 30's was a little light in the loafers.
    They sure had some colorful paint schemes.

    Absolutely stunning. The F-22 of it's day. It quickly became obsolete. One of the last open cockpit fighters. Totally kewl :).

    I spoke to a pilot, who flew with the 19th F.S., at Hickham. After 07 December, they pulled a few out of the crates and flew CAP. He later became the XO of the F-100D 506th Tac Fighter Wing at Tinker in the late 1950's.

    Bob- That one came out beautiful. Hard to believe they were fighting Zeros with those in the Philippines at the beginning of WW-II.

    Thanks. With an R1340 for power they weren't as fast as the Zero but I'll bet that in the right hands, a Zero would have a hard time nailing one.

    I'm from cali and never heard the expression until, coincidentally, I heard an Air Force general say it while I was an Academy Cadet. Very commonly used for decades since within the military. Now, of course, we no longer ask if anyone wears loafers, nor tell them if they appear to be a little "light" while wearing them.

    Thank you. I'm almost finished with a knockout Boeing 314 Clipper. I finally got the little blue numbers covered up. Then comes a B-17G, "Mr. Lucky". All of these will be displayed at the Boeing Centennial celebration in May at the Museum Of Flight and after September, it will travel.

    Bob- When the F-15 was first developed, they intended to paint it an air superiority blue that was not that much lighter than your Peashooter. Did not last long and most were painted in the grays we are used to seeing.

    Do not think they ever intended to paint F-15 wings yellow, though.

    Taz, I saw some time back a modern fighter painted with the blue and yellow scheme but I can't remember which one. It's interesting that this blatant livery from the early thirty's is not known to many nowadays but the army Air Force did have some blazing coloration on their fighters. I have a painting started of the Curtiss P-6E with the O.D., black and white, and yellow wings. Also with the Snowy Owl emblem on the fuselage. Beautiful. In WW2 some of the P-51's displayed a Photo-Recon blue camo on the top side, Lou V comes to mind. And some of the USAAF Spitfires were all photo-recon blue...because they were photo-recon airplanes. Anyway, the coloring of the fighters in the 30's was not related to the WW1 stuff since it wasn't personalized, just some squadron hubris, maybe.

    You'll have to give us the travel schedule so we can hopefull see it, for those of us not near Boeing.

    So I gather that the exhibit will remain at the museum through the summer? I plan to spend a day or two in Seattle on my way back from my planned August trip to Ketchikan.

    From what I have been told, the display will be at the MOF from May 6th through the summer until September. The dates have changed a couple of times so I think they are solidly in place now.

    Bob- Recon Lightnings were blue, too. Lots of photos of F-5s (photo-recce P-38) in blue. Here is one (F-5B) based on the J or L model P-38. Based on the camo on the P-38, J models.
