Wow that's crazy. I can't imagine what would be in that location that could cause such an explosion other than a bomb. It doesn't look like it was a pressurization issue that ripped it out like that 747 with the cargo door failure that tore a huge hole in the fuselage (United flight 811).

I don't know how..... The whole place stinks, you won't smell a damn thing ;)

I actually haven't been to Somalia but I have spent a bit of time in Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya and they are smelly places. Djibouti is the worst, the whole damn country looks like a trash pile from the air. I imagine Somalia much the same.... Almost went into Somalia but fortunately avoided that one.

That location, between windows. higher than the floor.

The 'pink' stain down the side looks gruesome.

Lets just hope it was the guy with the bomb.

Question for our airplane builders. How bad would that have been at cruising alt + speed? Could it have been loss of aircraft?

Amen to that..... just read an article reporting that it was an oxygen cylinder that exploded.
Are they located above or below the passengers ??

It also looks about the best place on the fuselage for this to happen? Above the wing where you have a lot of strength?

If that is true they are lucky that is all that happened. I guess there pressure testing gas bottles is just too inconvenient. We do have procedures to avoid that sort of thing.

I think that would be tough to answer without knowing how big the explosive was. It looks like the structure's tear-stop design did its job. The increase in pressure diff. at altitude could enhance the force of the blow out.

Article I read said that O2 bottles are in the overhead.

The explosion was not in the overhead.

Could have been moved down to where the hole is, though.

Good that it happened at only about 10,000 ft. No decomp.

Maybe a pax personal oxy cylinder? Not part of the aircraft? Might explain the location....

I'm thinking back to the Aloha incident also.....
I think I'd rather have a breach above the wing than near the front or rear where it has 360 degrees to go at.

Good point about the tanks though....although a blast big enough to penetrate those would have destroyed the fuselage?

There was actually a window there. Blew out between frames, although the fwd frame appears to have substantial damage. Upper extent of the damage is a longitudinal skin splice, which makes sense given how clean that edge is. The longitudinal rip below the window on the fwd side would be along the lower edge of the window belt (skin is doubled or even tripled along the window).

Its an A321. Only plane in their fleet (Daallo Airlines), 19 yo (the plane).

A bit fwd of the wing. The front spar would be where there is a gap in the windows.
