Firstly: A hangar dinner for a local pilot who completed his circumnavigation in a Searey (80 knot amphib). Held at a country airpark with an eclectic mix of light aircraft. Dinner talk and slide show as fascinating.. all kinds of challenges to have fuel for long legs such as Aleutians to Japan, bureaucratic challenges such not allowed back airside to own plane without a boarding pass.. so go back print up a made-up one, present at door and voila.. bureaucracy satisfied .. good to pass.. and landing Dubai International (no secondary exists) with A380 and others held while waiting for tiny Searey to land.. (done at airports not on water so as to clear customs..) Apparently he had fun going in hot to not hold them up longer than necessary and have fun with the long runway.. There were more serious challenges too.. weather and darkness and the like with no real infrastructure to support him and very remote.. and the only technical issue was an electrical failure when on 2nd last leg over Australia requiring a divert and spares sent.. not as easily done if happened a week earlier over a very unfriendly spot between Russia and Japan! Secondly another event the following day just 1hr drive away. Nice collection of things on the ground and in the air.. combined cars, bikes and planes. My highlights were a beautifully restored Beech Staggerwing and a Grumman Avenger being thrown around at low altitude with steep banks.. very impressive.. and sounded all the while barely loping along at 33 1/3rd rpm! I know what the 'tail number' starting with VH means, but what are the numbers starting with 24-XXXXXX and 19-XXXXXX Thanks.
Our "Recreational Aviation" (RA) is your LSA. RA Reg are 24xxx if factory built, 19xxx if kit/home build. I fly a 24 reg plane with my RA licence and schools are only allowed to use factory build planes.
*Fantastic* stuff! Some of those pix are truly "magazine worthy" - Great job! Thanks again for posting. Cheers, Ian
It appears that the C-47 is painted in the correct colors and dull finish, nice to see the correct neutral grey on the undersurface instead of the almost white grey that some "restorers" use. Any serial numbers (not squadron code) should be painted in high visibility yellow. Squadron codes ranged from yellow, grey, and white, depending on what kind of paint was available in the field of action.
Why thank you I *have* had the vast pleasure of seeing some of my images included in a couple of monthly aviation mags in the past year.. so glad others seem to want and enjoy them. I love seeing all the things posted here and doing my bit to share some local flavour back!
Cool! I've had a few pix published over the years; Few things as good for the ego as seeing your name in the 'credits' column. (Can't recall the correct name for that 'area' right now?) Getting paid is even better! Cheers, Ian
Yes.. I had hoped someone would appreciate something unique from here appearing amongst the usual suspects https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAC_Wirraway Another rare one I've seen at another show was a Boomerang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAC_Boomerang
I followed the blog..was an interesting perspective from someone visiting from another country and the observations and experiences! "A hangar dinner for a local pilot who completed his circumnavigation in a Searey (80 knot amphib)."
OK, What is the orange on white, v. short body, boom tail, almost a biplane aircraft. Never seen it before. Looks like a cartoon plane.
+1 I have seen all sorts of aircraft, but never one like that....What the heck is it? Photos show a great event. Thanks for Posting.
An odd duck for sure! Love the variety of possibilities in planes.. it's just endless.. I took photo of the blurb so could follow it up later.. Anyone know (I"m sure you do!) the aerodynamic device used on the wings? pair each side of fuselage in front of the vertical stabilisers.. have seen on a couple recent planes.. thanks Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks. I looked it up. Its previous iteration had a radial engine and the cockpit was higher.. Twin tails are so that the truck with the spray insecticide can back up to the body between the tails. Max speed achieved was 160 knots in a steep dive (WTH would try that???). One modified was in MadMax Thunderdome... Oh, it can carry 4 pax or a stretcher when not spraying.
