What is the apparatus above the cockpits? I've seen it on photos of the plane.

Actually a Mig-31. If you look at the site, you will see another angle that shows it off better. Much too massive for the Mig-29 and has those huge Mig-25-type engines.

    Yes, MiG 31, of course.

Still, what is the thing above the cockpit? I see it on pics of the 31 also.

    Some sort of antenna?

A quick Google search reveals it's a retractable mirror for the rear seat periscope. The periscope provides a forward view for the rear seat occupant during take-off and landing.

I'm pretty sure the SR-71 had a periscope for the same reason.... I bet the concept goes back a lot further.

Those AWACS buster AAMs on the wing are really impressive.

I flew some Stearman PT-13,17's that had a rear view mirrors mounted on the under surface of the upper wing.

The SR-71 had a rear-facing periscope for the pilot (not the back-seater) which allowed a view of the top of the aircraft between the tails even at Mach 3+. Was apparently used to check whether the aircraft was leaving contrails among other things.

It just had a periscope, not the big 12"x12" or so mirror sticking up like that, and I think it was for the pilot only.
The guy in back had no flight controls I don't think.
