I would not have wanted to be a passenger; but I love the way when it really counted, boom, flaps down.

I'm a Navy brat, and my dad was an aviator. Of course, this is all I ever wanted to do, until they figured out I'm blind as a bat, can't hear ****, and crazy as a loon. But, as a kid, I used to watch those clips of carrier landings. Man oh man, talk about trusting the system. You have one shot, and one shot only. Once you commit, there's no turning back. I can see why it can be a drug.

I can't get over the fluttering and wiggling of the vertical fins on the Airbus's. NOT going to happen on a Boeing!

You'd be surprised. A lot of the visible flutter depends on how much the pilots are fighting the wind rather than going with it, and gusts.

noticed that as well, wonder how much of that was an aberration of shooting through the hot exhaust than actual movement in the vertical fin

I saw that too, Bob... and of course immediatly thought of the New York crash of an AA A300 a couple months after 9-11.

"Overuse" of the rudder pedals by the first officer (wake turbulence) and the entire vertical stab departed the plane.

Both engines fell off before impact also.

So, in 2 months, AA lost 3 planes.

i thought of that but the fin is above most of the exhaust wake and the movement was rapid and intermittent. I did some work to change our drawings to reflect fin structure changes that were made to the KC-135 fin when it failed in a turbulent high speed run down hill. I know that flight surfaces will bend and wiggle in turbulence ( look at the wings flexing in these sequences) but I (and others) have noticed a lot of movement of the vertical and horizontal tail surfaces of some airplanes, like the A380.

It's because of the camera. It's caused by a rolling shutter.

OK, after watching again, I agree with you. In one sequence the nose was vibrating also.

But I'm still thinking of the AA A-300 that lost it's rudder.

Maybe so, but the A330's seemed to move a lot more than any of the other aircraft.

Sometimes saving weight is not too good an idea, depending on where it was saved. Anybody think we would still be flying B-52s and KC-135s if they had been designed by Airbus?

I might be in error here but comparing the movement in the fins with movement in the nose shows that there is no correlation sometimes. Anyway , I remember a lot of comments about the jiggling of the empennage on the A380 when it takes off.

Birmingham, UK has crazy take-offs and landings due to cross winds frequently (I think it's the only airport runway in the UK in N/S config, vs. usual E/W).

I was told by airport officials that the height distance between the highest point and lowest point of the runway is 22 feet. Airport knows they have to redo the runway, but as far as I know still no plans.

  21. Tcar

That would require shutting down the airport entirely, wouldn't it?

They only have the one runway.

Basically. They once had two runways (the other ran east/west) but it's not only no longer active it's largely gone.
