Alex- At least it is the right time to do one. That is an awful lot of cold water down there, though. Did you wear a poopie suit or just decide you would die if you went in?

I'd think you'd be flying with a dry suit on ready to go and hopefully a survival bag to grab as well and be thoroughly prepared as it's possible to be.

Obviously it's a terribly isolated place with ferocious storm systems sweeping through and endless cold ocean at that latitude, so you'd hope not to be needing it!

I admire the guts and glad we still have people like that pushing the limits of adventure and prepared to take the risks.

Cool looking aux fuel tank. Was he using un-leaded fuel?

Yes, just like Everest.. getting to the summit in one piece is awesome but still only halfway.

    Don't know!

I'm waiting on logistical and refuelling details from the tracking company which promised info.

Time of useful consciousness was measured in the seconds without a poopie suit in the English Channel when I was flying F-111Fs out of the UK. With the poopie suit, it was measured in minutes unless you got out of the water and into a raft. The Southern (Antarctic) Ocean is a lot colder than that. Everybody with ejection seats had to wear poopie suits overwater, and just about all training sorties in the UK included overwater flight. We had a capsule, so just carried them beside us.

The question that bugs me is, just because it is possible, do you need to do it ??

I totally get the need for a challenge...but seriously... reminds me of people that used to swim from England to France across the channel...Its been done, we know where France is !!!....unless you're raising money for charity or something...

Of course this coming from the bloke who was always the first to jump the new big jump at the motocross track.. as my ankles and orthopedic surgeon can attest to :)

I must be getting old, but that flight just seems dumb

That flight, in a homebuild single engined plane? err. No thanks.

At the very least I'd want 2 engines in case 1 fails, and multiple people monitoring the flight!

I have a client who swims the Channel regularly. Just because 'it's there'. He's not particularly fit and has a bad back, but every now and then he has to take that swim over to France...

Must be a battery if he's doing this to fight "climate change" as the side of the plane states.

Ok, what is the response time for SAR in that piece of wet? Poopie suit, raft. Not gonna make a bit of difference if they cant fish him out for days.

Forever unless he drops onto the deck of a ship. Not much ship traffic that far south for obvious reasons.

We had a round the world sailor go belly up in 1997 and they got him back.

Long way from anywhere 52 deg S in the Indian Ocean and 1500 mi SW from the mainland..

Survived in air pocket in upturned boat in those frigid waters for 4 days.. A P3 Orion located him and the Navy fished him out.. incredibly lucky on multiple fronts.
