Happens more frequently than you would expect but not up to the same rate as a bird strike. This one could have been much worse if for example the deer was struck by the nose gear and that in turn sheared off the nose gear.

Incident: PSA CRJ7 at Charlotte on Feb 15th 2017, deer strike on departure

if you search on avherald you will find several reports of this happening over the years.

When I helped a friend to fly freight in Friday Harbor we had to get a report from the operator at several islands to get a deer check. One strip, Blake Island, had a hump in the middle and you couldn't see if there were any deer on the other side of the hump when on final. A check with the guy on the ground was very helpful.

We hit a deer with an F-111F at a guard base in Wisconsin (Volk Field) while doing OT&E on night attacks against armor with the AGM-65D IIR Maverick. It was hunting season and the deer were coming onto the airfield reservation to get away from the hunters. We had seen them all over the place and had discussed an emergency procedure in case things got bad. That procedure was to raise the nose gear and let the deer hit the speed brake/main gear door and not take out the nose landing gear strut. Sure enough, one darted in front of one of our two aircraft, but the aircraft commander kept his cool and raised the nose wheels off the ground at around 110 knots. The nose wheels came down pretty smartly, followed by an abort, but saved any further damage. When we went inside the wheel well, there was a rib roast hanging from some hydraulic fittings and blood and guts all over the place. No real damage once everything was cleaned up. We had almost landed on one the night before, so we cancelled the deployment that night. No sense risking an aircraft and crew lives. 100 lbs at 100 knots is a lot of energy, and there were bucks there that weighed substantially more.

That low wing regional jet really had no chance.

Have seen a couple of pick-ups locally that have hit Elk, so things could always be worse. Next up someone will have hit an elephant. I can guarantee seeing a deer running across the runway while landing or taking off in the dark is bad enough. Luckily, we missed the one during landing, but our wingman was not so lucky the next night during take-off.

I doubt that, there were hunters because of the rut which causes the deer to move around a bunch. Bucks cruising for miles out of their tight range and does running for their lives. Opportunity for a buck during that time about 10x higher just like chance for collision.

Rob- That is what the local game warden told us when we asked, so I will take his word for it. He said the density of deer on the airfield reservation quadrupled during hunting season, and that cannot be explained by a bunch of horny bucks. Plus why would the density increase due to the rut? They are horny everywhere at that time of year.

The density doesn't increase, but each deer will cover 50x the amount of ground in a day. They also come out in open areas where the bucks can spot more does and the does can watch their 6.

You said the deer was hit at night? How many hunters are there at night? Deer are 80% active at night. Hunters are 0% active at night.

Rob- The place was crawling with deer in the daytime, too, but we only flew at night because the test was for night use of IR Mavericks against tanks while flying low level. We obviously are not going to agree on this, but, like I said, I will take the game warden's opinion over yours.

Well if you are so smart and want the best opinion you should talk to a wildlife biologist, not a hunter or warden.

    Here....

I assumed (erroneously, I see now) that you were referring to the OP (Noon).

I see now that you were responding to Taz' F-111 post (Night).

My deepest and sincerest apologies. :)

Rob- Why? The game warden has a lot more practical experience. By the way, nobody really cares one way or the other, except possibly you, so do not get your panties in a wad.
