I thought I read that the 512TR alternator is a GM alternator? I think mine went out finally. No big deal. I need to determine if it's a bad battery not taking a charge or if it's an alternator that went bad. i am thinking it's the alternator since the battery has no charge to it or very little. My battery light came on a few blocks from my house tonight. Got lucky. Anyways.....not a tremendous big deal. It's not too bad of a task taking it out and I will replace it with a new one or have mine rebuilt here locally.

I'm not sure about a 512TR but a regular TR uses a Delco Remy alternator, just plain old GM. It costs 200.00 or less to have it totally rebuilt at a qualified electric motor repair shop.

Sorry I don't have the number off hand but the repair shop can usually find it and can order the correct parts while it's being rebuilt.

Early 512TRs were the Delco part, then they switched to the Nippondenso part later in the run. I believe either can be rebuilt with no issues. Or you can spend $850 for a new one from Ferrari if you like :)

You can rebuild it yourself if you can source the parts, i put in a new regulator, trio diode, and a new bearing in, the brushes were still good as i'd only covered 15000 miles, however 3 months later it went bust again so i found a new one at 150 quid. Now i've tried to find a rectifier with no luck so far.

Alternator went to the shop today. might have a chance it will be back this afternoon or tomorrow at the latest. Quick turnaround time!! I went with an upgrade to 200 amps. They put heavier duty parts in it too for durability. Cost will be right about $250.00, not a bad price. Wish I would have done that on my Diablo. I paid $750 for a new 250 amp alternator upgrade. So I was taken on that. Oh well live an learn.

New 205 amp alternator went in and works like a charm. Car seems stronger also.

Just an update...Alternator is going back to the shop. It died on me again with less than 300 miles on it and about a year and a half later. Geesh!

Curious which part failed on the rebuild...what a pain to do the work twice.
Thinking positively though....I bet it will be easier this time around!
How did you get to it? Lay on top of the engine or from the bottom??

I can pull it from the top. Took me about 30-40 minutes to do it. Just a pain in the ass. Not sure what went bad on it. Going to have to have it redone. I am going to ask if there is an interchangeable alternator that will fit.

300 miles in 18 months? That's 16 miles per month. Perhaps it died of boredom. Or did you mean 3000 miles?

less than 300 miles. no time to drive it at times, but that is not the reason why the alternator died. I had the alternator upgraded to 200 amps and going to see if that is the cause of it. If so I will lower the amperage.

The voltage regulator failed on it. I am going to replace the battery also just to make sure the battery wasn't the issue leading to a burnt out regulator. Cost on it was like $80 bucks to fix.

Make sure they aren't using a regulator made in China (seriously)

Yeah they better have not used one from China. I think they use whatever AC delco uses.

fricking alternator regulator went out after 15 minutes of running it. Pretty pissed. I am going to have to take it out again and bring it back to the shop. If those people using cheap chinese parts, I am going to go ballistic! Anyone know what the stock alternator output is?

GM alternators do suck..know first hand owing GM products in the past. It appears there are 4 pins on the alternator and three wires coming out of the connector that plugs into the alternator. I wonder if I can use another alternator instead.

Anyone know for sure what the later 512TR alternator comes from? Wondering if I can retrofit that with my 512TR. Not sure.

I am pretty certain that caprice Alternator is the right one. Stock Caprice alternator will not keep up with the demands, but a modified one would like the one I posted. I don't remember how I cam across this one, but I did allot of searching. The housing is exactly the same and so is the mounting for the rear duct cover. I am going to give my alternator one more shot at a rebuild and if it goes out again I will be ordering one of these caprice GM alternators to try it out. I just need to verify that the connectors routing is the same. The actual connector will fit this one from the 512TR.
