    Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start this thread as I just put a deposit on this '86 Single Mirror TR. I think I got a good (not great) deal on this car and I wanted to start this thread to give the car the long overdue respect it deserves. I am taking a big risk on this car as it is completely undocumented, NO SERVICE RECORDS, not even for an oil change. Overall she is in good shape, but needs all the significant items (although she runs fine and just passed CT emissions with flying colors). It will need a major to start, and who knows what we'll find from there. This will be my "official" thread as I attempt to bring her back to a high quality driver.

The car is a US version Red on Black and sits with 25,600 miles as I left the dealers lot.

I welcome your thoughts and ideas on where to start. I will be reaching out to you often for help I am sure.

She joins the '85 Black/Tan 308 I currently have in the Ferrari stable

Congratulations! That's my favorite year. I should be joining the TR club in July of this year. It will be nice to hear some realistic numbers.

Nice looking car-big leap of faith seeing as it does not have any records. Where are you bringing it for the major? Did you get a ppi done?

I did not get a PPI. I have a lift in my garage and the seller let me have the car so I could go through it. I was most concerned that the car had never been in an accident and could pass emmissions. I was pleased to find that everything worked in the car and everything I went through checked out. I know it needs a lot of mechanical service which I will do as much as possible myself. The major is one I will not attempt myself. I am getting a few different quotes on the engine out and researching the facilities. My 308 is serviced by Black Horse Garage in Bridgeport, CT and I am fairly impressed with them so I may end up there, but it depends if they can come in with a competitive bid.

    joe,

i am not familiar w/ blackhorse but i will make a suggestion for another shop fairly close to you. since this is a boxer 12 you may consider bill pollard
@ sport auto in gaylordsville, ct. he can be reached @ 860.350.1515. both william h and i have had great histroy with bill.

he may be one of the very best boxer 12 guys in the entire country and also has nart history from the daytona and bb lm days.

    enjoy that fantastic machine!!!!

    best,

    peter

Thanks Peter. I know of Bill Pollard and Sport Auto. In fact, the guy I am buying the car from deals with Bill quite often and as part of me buying the car, called Bill and got a quote that Bill said he would honor for me on the major and clutch. I am looking to see how the rate compares, but agree it is worth a little bit of a premium to have him do the work due his history with the engine. Joe

I thought it was time for an update on the car. When I picked up the car it had a fuel leak, the engine cover struts were shot, the wheels needed to be balanced, and the front brake rotors were warped. I took care of all of these items myself.

I decided that since I did not know the date of the last major, I figured I better get it in. I took it down to Black Horse Garage in Bridgeport, CT. They are still working on the car, but I figured I would document the progress and get a few of the pictures posted. As they dug into the car, they found a bunch of misc items that should be addressed "while the engine is out"... last thing I want to do is to have to pull the motor again because an oil, coolant, or fuel line burst.

Not that you don't already know how good Black Horse is, but I got my Ferrari Mondial 3.2 cab from them about a year ago. The car had been serviced from them since coming out of garage queen status in 2006. Everyone from Algar Ferrari on down has repeatedly commented on the car's exceptional condition, which I attribute to the quality of the workmanship at Black Horse. Next time you are down there, please give Jon my regards!

Great update...! Thanks for posting and keeping us posted. Your car is an '86, right...? While the engine is out, can you photograph the engine type and number...? I'm interested to learn if the type is F113A040.

I think I may not be the only one watching this thread closely - wondering if we have the courage to do the same thing! If you don't want to give an itemized accounting of the repairs, can you at least ballpark it for us so we can either run away or keep looking at ads? Thanks!

Not too bad considering the "unknown factor".
I didn't see "rebuild water pump" on that list.
I would do it now if you haven't yet.

I would also take a close look at the alternator, check the bearings and armature, do a load test.

The shop did check out the water pump and felt everything spun freely and was leak free so they did not recommend a change or rebuild. They are going to check the alternator, although they (and I) are less concerned about that one as it can be replaced without pulling the motor.

They did run into a snag today which will delay the car at least another week. They have had it for 2 months (I have only owned it for 4 months... I want my car back!). As they were about to reinstall the engine, they went to install the new oil cooler lines and realized they were the wrong ones (aparently '85 & '86 are different and a little tougher to find). New ones were located in Germany for $1,800... but they knew there was no way I would pay that. They sent the old ones out today to have them custom fabricated. No ETA or cost on the fabricated parts as of the end of the business day. I'll keep you all informed.

Not doing the water pump is a mistake imho. It will cost a lot more to fix once it is leaking 6 months down the road. Black Horse is a good shop, but they are setting themselves up for failure but not doing the water pump now, while the motor is out.
