There appears to be a number of alternatives for replacement modules and coils for the Testarossa. Rather than chock up the Cross Reference thread I thought it may be better to answer some of the questions by creating a thread specific to this particular problem. I have 'missplaced' a coil (don't ask) and desperatly need to locate a suitable unit to run my 1987 Euro spec UK delivered car. It runs a Marelli AEI 500 C coil with a BKL 3B module. I've been out hunting around and located a couple of modules and another coil so today I did some playing around. I tried three different modules and BKL3B / BKL3BA both worked perfectly. However; Bosch 0 227 100 203 didn't work at all. Also, I tried a four pin oval plug coil which I believe is fitted to USA cars from 1988 - 1991. Its a Marelli AEI 600G. This coil uses one oval plug with four pins where my original uses two round plugs with 6mm femal blade terminals inside. Marked on the base near the four pin plug are sybols for + and - so I took the first two pins to the TR red wires and the two on the neg side to the yellow TR wires. No go. So then I swapped around the two reds, still no go, so swapped around the two yellows, still no go. So swapped back the reds, same thing, nada. So, either I have a dead 600G or I have wired it wrongly, or the 600G will not work on a Euro model car. Do you USA guys run a 600G or an AEI500C like the Euro cars? I desperatly need to find a coil that will run this car. She's not much good on 6 cylinders.
From a previous F Chat post: Here is the cross-reference list for Testarossa 1990-1991 ignition module; Ferrari part #124273M, which is the original BKL3B module. Manufacturer Part no. Now the above list looks to be a bit distorted so I think it's better to post up anything that has actually been tried and can be proven to work. Steve M suggests that the Transpo XM631 is a good replacement for the Marelli BKL3B I have tried a genuine Marelli BKL3BA which also seemed fine. Anybody else?
There is also a post in the cross reference thread which speaks of a BAE506D as a 'standard' Testarossa coil? All three of my cars 1987/1988/1988 are UK delivered cars and run AEI 500C coils with BKL3B modules. If the standard Marelli cils varied from country to country and year to year, can we try to build a data base here of what fits what? Let's start with the following. If your car uses the same coil but delivered to a different country, please add it to the list. Obviously if it has different coils, add it anyway. 1987 UK - AEI 500C coil with BKL3B module 1988 UK - AEI 500C coil with BKL3B module ? ?
Here is a picture of the plug on the base of the AEI600G which I tried to fit today. You can see that pins 1 and 2 are seperated by a plastic tang. My UK cars run two red wires and two yellow wires to the coils. If anybody is using a coil like this, can you tell me if your wiring is the same as mine, and if so, where do each of the wires go relative to this oval 4 pin plug? Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is a picture of a Jaguar XJS V12 Marelli ignition coil DAC-4608 1989 - 1996 from VIN 157118 Phil in the UK suggests that the correct Marelli Part number for this coil is BAE504DK So there is a totally different prefix series. We have seen AEI 500C and possibly AEI 600G coils but BAE 504 with varients DK and also F available. Very confusing!! Image Unavailable, Please Login
http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=139127623&postcount=22 Refers to a previos discussion where a Swiss owner was having trouble repairing his car and was looking for a new coil. Strange thing was that his car had an AEI 500E fitted and even Steve M hadn't heard of that one before.
My '91 US TR uses the AEI600G coil, and based on the keying features, the wires are connected in this fashion: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Steve, do you think it matters which red goes to which + pin and which yellows go to - pins? I've tried mine in all combinations and it will not run Apart from the wiring can you see any reason why a 600G won't run an early non cat car.
No, I don't think it shouldn't matter as the schematic shows the two terminals holding the yellow wires should be connected together, and the two terminals holding the red wires should be connected together. I don't think there are any active components inside the coil (that could be blown up), but there might be. Have you made any resistance measurement between the various coil terminals? I'd guess that red-to-red and yellow-to-yellow should be 0 Ohms, and red-to-yellow should be some non-zero (but not infinity) value (i.e., the resistance of the coil primary windings). Might be useful to make similar resistance measurements on your remaining original coil to compare. You don't mention it, but isn't there also a BR (white/red) wire connected the the red wires on the 7-12 bank? Are you saying that if you put your original coil on either bank, that bank has good spark? I.e., a coil could actually be working, but you won't get spark if something else is wrong downstream (carbon button, rotor, coil wire connections, etc.) -- just a thought as a way to "confirm" everything else is OK (although the engine will only run briefly on the 6 cylinders of the 1-6 bank when the 7-12 spark is missing).
Nope, I haven't swapped them around yet. The problem coil is on the UK Drivers side so the car runs fine on 6 cylinders and I've swapped the modules to the other side but not the actual coil.
Just to clear things up. I took a coil off the 87 to use on the 88 when I had an issue that turned out to be fuel related rather than spark. The 87 lives at a different property and somewhere between the two sheds the coil has gotten lost! So before the 87 was all fine. No issues at all. And the only coil I've been able to find so far is an AEI600G and I'm trying to make the car at least run on that coil. The AUI600G is an eBay purchase and there is no verification that it is working. As Steve suggests. I'll have to swap it to the other side now to check it, but apart from a totally dead coil, I expect this to be a wiring issue as the two coils run different plugs. Unless of course, my Marelli igniyion system won't run the AEI600G?
Steven, The composite picture that was posted above is identical to that posted by me last year on the same topic in cross-reference thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=139226648&highlight=ignition#post139226648 I am running my 1990 Testarossa (both cyl.banks) using this very coil shown in the picture and XM631 ignition modules. Both coil and module can be purchased for less than fifty bucks for each side... Regards, Juri.
Thanks for the confirmation that they can work Juri, but, in your case, did you already have the proper 4-pin connector shape on the wiring harness for that type coil? Robert -- any progress? Juri's post got me thinking that the connection between the two yellow wires and the connection between the two red wires might be inside the 4-pin connector on the harness side (rather than inside the coil) so wouldn't hurt to make these connections yourself external to the coil -- just a thought...
A bit of luck Steve, but limited. I've got the BAE number sorted in my head now. All of these coils have a flange on the side with an actual BAE number from Marrelli stamped into them. In addition, they have the Marrelli sticker on the front with a different number, in our case, AEI500C or AEI600G!! First I made up a set of four short connector wires with 6mm spades on one end and very small females on the other end and these fitted very nicely inside the oval plug of the 600G. Then I was able to connect this to the standard wiring on my car, and using a known good ignition module I tried to kick the old girl into life but she still wouldn't play. So I went out and scrounged a couple of other parts that a local mechanic had collected from what he believes to be a Fiat 100 series. These were marked BAE 209B5F and BAE 209B4H and they came with a simple bracket mounted to the coil with rivets, like they use on a 328. He also had an old 504C on the original bracket but he thougth that it was dead. So after playing around with the rewired 600G no no avail, I moved on to testing all three of these borrowed coils. All three worked perfectly. So either the wiring of the 600G is an issue, or the damn thing is dead, I still don't know. Interesting to note that the frame that the 600G mounts into is totally different to the 504C and the two Fiat coils tested. The alloy section is much different and orientates the coil 90 degrees rotated as well. You can't fit a 600G into a 504C holder and vice versa. So I'm back on the road, with a borrowed 504C and factory bracket, and with my original module. Still I wouldn't ind understanding the 600G so I can use it for a spare on distance travels. Steve, Here is a picture of the ignition coil connector, which is used in later Testarossa models 1990-1991. It fits perfectly with those ignition coils I described in my previous posts. Another picture shows connection to the XM631 ignition module (which has a white plastic center cover). I hope that this will help to resolve the wiring color issue... Juri. No need to pay that much money for a new coil and ignition module. The new coil with those double-prong contacts can be purchased online for less than $25 and the modile for less than $20 and the aluminum radiator frame can be reused. This is how I did it and my car drives perfectly...
Not that I need one but where can one find the coil for our older TRs for that cheap? That link above that you posted shows the newer type not the one for our older style connectors. I have sourced the china power modules and they work great.
OK.... these DAC 6093 coils are for the Jaguar XJS 1988-1990 with Marelli ignition system. You can find those on the internet using this identifier: W0133-1614576. Here is the link: http://www.autopartsdeal.com/catalog/?N=0&uts=true&Ntt=1994+Jaguar+XJS+OE+Aftermarket+Ignition+Coil
Cool, thanks. I would've loved to try one of those but I actually bought two new original AEI500 coil assemblies (one for spare).
For 1986 TR one can use the same coil DAC 6093 as for the Jaguar XJS 1988-1990 with Marelli ignition system. You can find those on the internet using this identifier: W0133-1614576. Here is the link: http://www.autopartsdeal.com/catalog...+Ignition+Coil As fot the ignition module - use XM631.
