In the OEM 512 TR WSM 1, Part C, page 51 - 55; the Selfdiagnosis of the Motronic 2.7 in the 512 TR is discribed. (Txt of the first part of testing as last jpg)

Pic 1 is from the WSM 1 (fig 40.); pic 2 & 3 actual in my car .....

The test-unit with the testbuttons # 3 for each bank is not here ..... it's just a piece of metal here instead...

Any one who can give me a clue on how I can do the testing as discribed in the WSM ?

Where is the unit with testing buttons to be found in MY CAR ..?

Ahhh yes..the phantom test buttons. I have run across this a few times with various Ferrari models in the past, 348, Mondial t, 355 (95 only). Some have them, some don't. Me thinks in the past they were removed by some dealers to prevent other shops from being able to get access to engine codes, and others may have been delivered that way from the factory.

You may get lucky by searching around various Ferrari parts suppliers, wreckers etc and purchase the switch and install it. Otherwise your stuck going to a shop with the necessary scan tool to pull the codes.

Since your car is a euro model it won't have the self diagnostic buttons. US law required them. If you look in the parts book you will notice the parts are shown for US/Canadian cars only.

Looking at the OEM 512 TR Spare Parts Catalogue, Table 10, I see this picture ....

Is it correct that there are two knobs (fig 50) and only one little cable (fig 51) to the unit ?

Which connection does this knob make ?

It looks very simple: get two knobs and two cables .... can we make a test unit ourselves ? (Challenging .... :) )

I did order these 2 knobs + two cables ...

    2 Special Order Item No. 146196 £13.00 £26.00
    New Ferrari 512 TR
TESTER PUSH CABLE - - VALID FOR USA

    2 Special Order Item No. 145810 £4.35 £8.70
    New Ferrari 512 TR
TESTER PUSH - - VALID FOR USA

    Wait ... and see :)

Two questions, does your dash have the lights/bulbs that will flash the coded sequence, ie; being able to read the codes that the ECU will produce when you connect(#51) and push the button(#50, not a knob but a push button:)) to start the diagnostic process and do you have the WCM manual that tells you how to access/activate the codes and what they mean?

Ahh, if you see my other thread regarding binnacle removal, I just went in there and put in 2 bulbs for the Check engine lights. All non US cars dont have them, but the wiring harness is there and complete.
Job done. it now reads error codes out.

    We solved it !

Made one little connector with one wire.

Now when I can plug it at one ECU connector for two-three seconds; the correspondent check-engine light flashes now 4444 !

That's to say: on this bank NO problem in the Motronic ECU.

Maybe, this can give you just the dash to make one yourself ..... :)

This simple solution with one connector (like on the cable # 51) is working, but I now see that a simple push button does the job far more easy.

One of the reasons is also that I found out that a complete reset of each ECU can be done by pushing the contact 10 secs ! Never knew that but it's in the WSM !

With 2 simple buttons, it will be the same as the U.S. Govt decided how the Ferrari factory had to make the system in the U.S. F 512TR/M cars.

In all others versions outside U.S. (EU, CH, JAP, GB etc) these buttons (# 50) don't exist but can be installed very easy !

Today I bought 2 fine 18mm industrial switches ($ 20); will make two cables (# 51) and install it like oem soon.

Am still thinking if I make the switches in the OEM place or make them in the cover behind the seat so I can simply reach for them without having to open the special lid .....

Resume : It all will cost you appr. $ 35 to make and may be a great help in your 512TR too I hope !

Last job I had to do was installing my switches .... and now I did ! (Little bulbs for 1-6 & 7-12 in the dash were already installed 2 years ago ...)

Prepared well, had 2 cables with connectors made in my F shop for $ 10 together ...

Unscrewed the little holder/box (8mm nuts) in which the switches are OEM istalled in (only) U.S. versions.

Mounted the two switches and READY ! Anyone with a 512TR, not having this simple diagnosis system: D I Y !!

Thanx Clive ... if I may choose, I prefer red buttons instead of oem black ones ...

Nicest of it all is that now we have the possibility of self-diagnosis fully operational ....

I am now also able to reset the ECU's (10 secs push) ...

Hope you all (512TR owners) benefit from my stories ... ;)

Where on Ferrari database can I find this?

I would love to trace each wire in the moronic on the 512tr. (I noticed someone did this for the 355 in that section)

Specifically, I would like to know which individual connector (inside the harness)gets input from the o2 sensor since it operates at such low voltage. I really wish to put a higher clamping force JPT connector on this wire inside the harness.

I own a euro 512 tr and been having issues with my ECU, I happened up this thread, with a little luck I was able to purchase the parts that Mel indicated for a very reasonable price. They came from a 348, but the parts #S are the same. So here is the 1st question, The parts I recieved #146196 has 2 wires at the connector that attaches to my existing ECU, but the connector coming from my ECU has 3 wires. What's up with that?

Next, I understand that once connected, that pressing the push button for 10 seconds will reset my ECU. What are the ramification good or bad about doing a reset?
