Very new: my first gear sometimes squeeks when slowing down and jumps out of gear. Other gears no problem at all ... but there sure is a problem that I take very serious ! This means that I will have to lift the engine, undo the gearbox and have it repaired. The fabulous 512TR has only 75K kms so the gearbox can not be worn. So I am absolutely not thinking about a complete rebuild and renewal of all bearings unless ....... Our Fshop hopes it is one of the nuts # 15 or #17; if so it's not too expensive we hope. Of course it will all be measured out and looked into the diff also if this is still O.K. .... Are there any other 512TR owners with similar problems in the past ... Any good other tips please; f.i. to yes or no renew the two outgoing bearings # 11 also...? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh yes the good old F gearbox. Since you have it out already I HIGHLY suggest you install a new out output shaft bcus it will snap sooner or later. You can upgrade to a 512M shaft You dont want this shaft to be too strong though since it acts as a fuse to save the transmission from too much power
Hi William, thanx for input ... you mean part # 29 ? But if it breaks, it can be easily replaced with another one or am I wrong ...? Image Unavailable, Please Login
No, I am not James ... v Could that be a cause ...? How can we check that please ? I mean... does anyone recognise this problem ... ??
With respect William, I think this kind of confusing mis-information is not going to help anyone and detracts from what is a very good technical forum for Testarossas. P
We can shift to first gear, accelerate fine, no problem. But if you go off the throttle, the shifting really bangs out of first gear.... Can we link this to a bad/wrong adjustment ? (hope so ...) (By the way, engine-out was less than 1000 km ago...) If I can make the engine/gearbox run on a lift, with the shift linkage rod disconnected and then accelerate and then leave the throttle ... If now the gearbox is O.K. ... is this proof it was a fault in the rod (hope the language gives no problem, sorry !) ? Which part may be defective... Image Unavailable, Please Login
The reason that I posted this was that my 1986 suddenly started doing this kicking out of gear thing (both first and second gears - in my case more in 2nd than first) and of course I was afraid I had broken the transmission. What happened was that the bushing where the shift rod goes into the transmission case had broken apart and come out. When it was replaced and the linkage adjusted the people at the shop (sponsor Norwoods here in Dallas) said it was just about the best shifting Testarossa that they had driven in a long while.
No, I mean # 1 on this one. This shaft will snap after a lot of abuse. If you track your car or do burnouts you'll be changing this at least once a year Image Unavailable, Please Login
What?? Once a year.. that is rediculous.. Word of wisdom.. drive her hard but dont abuse.. there is a difference.. I would check to see if the shift linkage bushing are worn.. You may be out of adjustment as well. Dropping the gear box would be my last resort.. Sounds like an adjustment to me.. R
+1.. Once my mechanica changed them and properly adjusted the shift linkage.. she is like a new car.. Burnouts are the worst thing for these car.. better yet any car with such a wide back tire and the engine in the back.. R..
Thanx all... (more info is appreciated...).. Will have this examined on Thursday, hoping for the best (=# 36!!) Are there no 512TR owners over here at all with this experience.... Or Down-Under drivers ....
Especially with the engine out so shortly ago, I would suspect the linkage adjustment or a fastener missed or not torqued down at assembly above anything. Check your motor mounts, too.
DITO; My 88 after a major and new linkage bushings plus linkage adjustment at 50k is as new. BURNOUTS are for, lets say, for children.
It is NOT a good story ........ Tonight we did some fault-finding ....(hope my English discription will be good enough :-0) ) We put the F up on a lift; disconnected the shift linkage rod... lifted the body so the wheels were free. Made the gearbox go in first gear by hand, started the engine with clutch in ... Released the clutch: first the wheels ran with the revs but suddenly the gear jumped out. Did that in second gear, no problems at all ... Repeated that for the Youtube ... Conclusion: we have to lift the engine once again..... and find the fault(s) .... Will keep you all informed ! Dear Ferraristi, Umm...guys... William races a Koenig Specials modified 512 TR race car. He has real world track experience punishing this car and knows what breaks and doesn't. He has spent alot of money modifying and beefing up his 512TR to withstand the rigors of constant track use. Oh...sorry to hear your troubles Mel... Please keep us posted. We usually don't hear about issues on 512 TRs. Shamile Freeze....Miami Vice !
Hi Shamile, The car has 75.000 kilometers on the odometer now ... maybe it starts from now.... ? Gearbox will be opened next month I hope ... I have no plans for a complete refurbishement and crown-and-pinion of not absolutely necessary ... Will keep you all posted ...
Shimile, thats one reason I think the information is misleading and frightening to the majority of Testarossa owners. The history DOES NOT PROVE the fault happens to all cars, just the opposite. While misuse and/or racing may cause damage to the parts , sports driving does not and therefore MOST, if not ALL, average Testarossas will not succumb to this fault. The spreading of misguided rumours is inconsiderate IMO. P
This is certainly NOT a good sign .... in the drained gearbox-oil I found metal parts ... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh dear me Mel, that does not look too good, hope it is not going to be too expensive. Keep us i touch with the findings. Good luck. P
Hi, sorry for asking a different questions, can somebody let me know how to remove the silent block #36 on the diagram. I have been trying to remove it due to wear, but could not figure out if it have any screw holding it. Last time I had the 30K service, I also have same issues of gear popping out of shift and they made some adjustment to the linkage and everything is good.
That's no good.. Sorry to hear that.. I know the feeling, not with the TR but with a 70's baby lamborghini.. All the best.. Daniel
