Just took delivery of a 76 boxer for a total restoration. I went over the car thoroughly with the potential buyer before completing the sale then we arranged shipping to my place. Its clear (not so much in these pics) that the only option that makes sense is to completely restore the car. Pretty much everything is tired or worn out as is the engine. For now im just going over the car taking hundreds of pictures documenting everything before I start taking it apart. I wont start digging into it until im ahead of schedule on some other projects Im knee deep in right now so nothing too interesting yet. Here are a few pics as of today.
Someone thought it was a good idea to paint the airfilter lids a textured grey as well as the bellhousing and top of the block along with the hardware that joins the block together.
Tinited windows, not so good tires, additional door speakers, wrong speaker grills, wrong steering wheel, BBi fender lip seals for the clamshells, the list goes on.

Seriously Paul, why don't you find something to do in your spare time? If it's all the same to you, I'll take the wheels!

We still need to talk about the marketing things when you have time... like in 2014.

512BB production #1! Very nice! I wonder if you'll find any interesting things, I'm expecting it to be a bit of a cross-over from the 365BB.

I'll be following this thread - your projects are always fantastic Paul.

Is it driveable? I'm curious if you would want to put a few miles on before starting the restoration, or just dive right in?

I've got a Boxer in a similar condition and I have absolutely no desire to drive it, whatsoever. What's to be gained? You're only likely to damage things. If the car needs a full restoration, just wait until it's done. But of course, I can only speak for myself and my own Boxer, perhaps this one is different.

Believe me I wanted to drive it but when we looked at it, it had an engine knock so it was shut off and not started since. Can't risk even just running the engine in case it pokes a hole in the block.

I expect to find a cross over as well and maybe some unique things, we'll see! Looking forward to jumping in. I'll post more pics later.

I know the 512 came out in '76, but are you saying that this is the 1st 512 BB off the line with that serial # or just the first series of 512 BBs from '76 - mid 81?

Paul that is an important Boxer you have been entrusted with! Does the owner want to 'un-federalize' it; getting rid of the USA side marker lights and getting a set of knock-off wheels? Let's not forget those much nicer looking silver spoke steering wheels to. Marcel could probably confirm if 19271 was the showcar example for the new model introduction...

It seems some 365 GT/4 BB models have a later serial number with the last showing as *19445* which is some cars later than the *19271* example pictured.

    Good day Paul,

    Very cool pics!

Also, check the carbs to see if they are a cross over from the 365 series... I say this, as my car is an early car and "discovered" that mine has 365 carbs ...

Check to see if the car has the electric choke as well. Mine, has the button and some wiring, but nothing going back into the engine bay... and because of my 365 carbs, no electric choke on the carbs themselves.

I would be curious as to what you find... Did they use up some 365 parts on all of the early 512s, or just a few? I guess the results of your investigation will add some evidence to my comment(s).

    Cheers,

    Sam

Thanks Charles, I will be un-federalizing it. The show car had octagon nuts so once its confirmed it is or is not that car in Paris then it'll get either spinners or nuts depending. Yes there was overlap between the 365 and 512 run.

IMO....no....the tires (not sure of age) are not the correct speed rating.

That's an interesting detail the glass fitment (in the shot of the terrible moulding painting), in 1976 Ferrari had yet to get all the window surrounds into rubber, so as you see here they jammed the same material used as door window stripping into the triangles!!

This detail only happens in the very early 1976 -1977 cars, in only a year...late 1977 they finally got the proper rubber profiles made that carry on as full gaskets in the later cars.

    Great pics....

This car was one of those "pushed around the shop" since it was first offered for sale in 2009.

    Engine block #00004.
Maybe that should go to the Museum?

If you look at Raab's list, this 5 liter car REALLY stands out in the 1976 production (per Nathan Beehl).......nothing but 365BBs for hundreds of cars, until they finally 'flipped the switch" to 5L BBs...

    :D :D :D :D

JRV was the last person "in the engine".......odd but true.

Man, epoxy patches to the expansion tank, BRUSH marks on the window moldings....I had forgotten a few of those details myself!
You normally see the miter cut at that rear corner of the window surround.

Good luck Paul, I know it'll be great.

It's the very first 5 liter car sold to the Public.

Raab actually called it a "protoype".

It was returned to Italy at one point for some work ,and "the legend" is the Factory wanted it back as a Museum Piece.

Absolutely no confirmation on that...just "shop talk"

This is the first car sold to the public with a 5 liter displacement.

You'll see this VIN as 'first" in all the "Lists" of 512BBs.

Nathan theorized that "maybe" engines 00001 - 00003 were destroyed, playing with them on the dyno.

More pics. The car has no build sequence numbers anywhere that I can find so far. Checked all the usual places without taking parts off.

Noted the clearance indent in the frame tube for the rear clamshell gas struts. Maybe an early boxer trait or unique? Not sure. Anyone with a carbed 512 or 365 have these indents?

    Good day Paul,

    No indent on my 512....

Also, I think the steering wheel is incorrect and for a later car ... I may be wrong here, but it may be worth checking into.

Can you take some pics of the carb-sides (outward), as I am curious what carbs (365 or 512) are on this car?

    Cheers,

    Sam

Thanks for checking Sam. Yes I'll take pics and yeah the steering wheel is one of several personal touches that will be undone. We've been looking for a wheel on and off since mid nov. would like a 76 date coded momo that I can have anodized then re-wrapped to look new and correct.

I have Mel Nichol's book. There is a pretty good pick of the Paris show car, albeit overheating....
