Im blowing my brains out on finding the correct tool kit for this 76 BB512. Parts manual pic below from a Nov 76 BB512 parts manual. First problem. Ive never seen a brief case with that style latch. Speaking with Brian Crall who is a boxer judge and ex ferrari tech that worked on boxers when they were new, now running his own shop says yes the picture for the brief case is incorrect but the tools are correct. His explanation was the manuals were made before the car so sometimes you get variations in the parts book such as that. Its accepted at judged events that this brief case looks different than the one in the parts book. Fine, problem 1 solved. Next problem. Boxers had a plug socket in the jack bag because it was to long to fit the tool kit. Parts book shows no socket in the tool kit, every kit I find has the socket in the tool kit and is claimed to be a boxer tool kit. Wouldn't be the first time Ive seen sellers slapping a boxer model name on a part they're trying to sell and its from a 328 and blatantly wrong. The part number of the original tool kit (same as 365 Boxer) changed up twice ending up with a kit I say is a GTC4 kit with the short socket that won't pull a plug on a boxer. Just because the number is superseded doesn't make it all of a sudden right when you're being judged for period correct items. Ive seen it countless times with so many parts Ive lost track now. What I need to know is does anyone here have a tool kit without the short plug wrench as well as it lacking the slot in the tray for such a socket? If I go by the parts book (Brian says the judges do himself included) then the C4 style kit is wrong. If I get concrete evidence from this thread that the kit is one way or another then thats the route Ill take to get whats agreed to be correct. No sense in buying the wrong kit or looking for a kit that simply doest exist. Please post pics of carbed boxer tool kits 365 and 512 if possible or even if someone has actually seen the correct type missing the position for the short (incorrect) plug wrench. If ferrari just took a C4 kit and tossed the plug wrench then Im cool with that. thanks! Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is a pic of a tool kit that was posted as correct for a carbed boxer. Looks like C4 to me because the plug wrench is incorrect for a boxer, wrong in the parts book and simply won't pull a boxer spark plug. Thoughts? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Identical to the tool kit in my 365bb, although my jack bag has the "correct" spark plug wrench. This tool kit was purchased new in 1984, as the car did not have one.
I have three toolkits. The one for my 365BB is exactly the same as the manual photo shown ie there is no space for the plug spanner it is kept in the toolbag. The other two (from 512BB's) are the same as your photo but the socket does indeed fit. So is it possible that either the spark plug socket has been taken from a c4 or a 400 that I think also had a similiar kit . Or indeed those kits are identical apart from the plug socket .
Can you post a pic of the 365 one please? There were 3 365's with a chassis number after this BB512 according to my list so it would stand to reason that it had the same kit as yours. Would love to see it. Thanks
If it was the original one then I could put stock in it but ferrari ran out of the original ones and changed the numbers up.
I dont imagine they made 500 more early boxer tool kits than needed for the production run. There are 360 parts that are NLA now so Im told.
Here it is . The design is annoying as when you open it the tools on one side or the other fall out . There is just a piece of foam between the two . The 512BB design is better with the lift out tray. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Excellent that matches the parts catalog. Could I see a pic of the latches please? Sorry if Im being a pain.
According to the Nov 76 512 boxer parts book this is the tool kit we need to find to be correct. The car was at the Oct 76 Paris show so it certainly predates the parts book.
The latches . You can also see the height difference between the two. The one on the left is for the 365BB. The other is the 512BB. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Registered 18th feb 1978. Don't have the parts book but the manual which is original to the car (pretty sure as it has the wallet /service book dealer directory etc) says in text but not picture form that the spark plug spanner is kept in the jack bag not the tool kit (!).
Here is the tool case that I got with an early 365 BB, 17511. I don't know if it is original to the car. With fewer spanners and a plug socket, it clearly is different from the tool set in the other photo in this thread. Image Unavailable, Please Login
If wrences are side by side, it was everest. In pairs, with each other are polytools or kravn. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Interesting... Here is a toolkit I acquired for my '79 512BB that was missing one. The wrenches say "CHROME VANADIUM KRAVM" on one side and "FERRARI" on the other and are stacked in two deep. I'd be curious what the Tool Kit Gurus make of it. Is it proper for a '79 512BB? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi did you get sorted with your toolkit? If not let me know as I think I may have one. Best regards John
As your car was in the middle of 365 production I'd say that is the correct one. It was in the car, when you bought it? It was there, the last time I looked......
