These are some pictures of a 512 bb, "21171" a project I have been working on for quite some time. As I understand, the previous owner purchased the car in Italy from the original owner. He then sent it back to Ferrari to have it resprayed Rosso Corso and had bbi power mirrors and rear bumper with lights added. The current owner decided he liked the factory specifications in the original Argento better. What started out as a major service and a freshening up quickly turned into a restoration project. She wasn't in bad shape except for low compression on a couple cylinders and a second gear that would not stay engaged.

Nice, typical that you need to modify or make your own special tools to fix Ferraris.

Interesting, guess not all Ferrari flat 12 diffs are weak and ready to blow up.

IMO, Boxers see more 'reasoned use" than the TR when new, I guess the "Don Johnson" effect"....

The earlier castings being lower production, different alloys...better welding rods..who knows???

BB and BBi's had junk, skinny tires compared to TR and 512 not to mention a difference in torque and a big difference in the demographics of the owners when bought new so diff failures were not very common.

The market being what it was brought a huge influx of flippers into the market for TRs and buyers drove them like they stole them.

People seem to think diff problems started with the flat twelves. Wrongo. Most dealing with flat twelves now were not around during the heyday of the Daytona. They had a reputation for gearbox destruction too from those that liked to side step the clutch and other mayhem. I know of many that left differential parts on the pavement and that is exactly why good Daytona transaxles are worth so much now. One of my old clients bought a Daytona new and went straight to the parts counter and bought a spare transaxle. He blew the first one up and bought another spare. He still has that one in the crate. I told him I could get him enough to buy a nice new car for the wife in exchange for it and he turned me down.

Unfortunately I wasn't thinking of posting when I started this project so I neglected to take many pictures of disassembly. I welcome any criticism, as I am trying to maintain originality throughout the restoration.

Looks great! Guard that fast idle solenoid with your life, I found an NOS one for the 76 BB resto which ferrari said was the very last one available. I wanted another but I've come up empty handed since. Interesting color on the front rotor splash shields, ive seen them that color before but the 76 and the 79 are black. Wonder why they varied?

I just looked at my list to update the color to silver but I already had a hand written note saying red but painted silver in 87 with boxer trim and DOT converted. What was done to it during the conversion? Did it get the full treatment with bumper shocks etc?

Great to see another BB being restored.

I can't wait to see the final paint.
Argento is the original color of my BB so I am still on the fence about going from Giallo Fly back to the original Argento,

Cant wait to see the final.

I originally thought someone had repainted them, so I painted them black. Then I saw a new set on the shelf at McCanns in that color. If the solenoid is in working order, I have had good luck re-plating them.

No, they went pretty easy on it. Found door braces and some minor reinforcements under rear bumper and in front shell at hinges.
