Made many a trip to Rosarito Beach, Mexico in a red Volvo wagon exactly like that years ago...Once, the Mexican Federali took part of the interior apart looking for drugs at the border...GOING INTO Mexico.

It is! But it's a 2004 V70R. Still, would be fun to take a photo of them next to each other like in the ad. :D

When I was a kid, one of my neighbors down the street had a red wagon identical to the one in the ad but with a 5.0 Ford V8 and 5-speed swapped in! Looked completely stock except for some larger black BBS wheels.

My family had an 86 Volvo 740 Turbo sedan and when the turbo was on its way out, I had the Ford 5.0L engine/tranny swap done by a guy up in Maine. Ran the car for another 3 or 4 years that way. Kept everything completely stock except for the exhaust. Because of the 5spd transmission and the way it fit the engine was placed as far back as it could go and we still needed an extension on the shifter for proper placement. The end result was a better balanced car that rotated into turns now, instead of the normal push that car exhibited. Perfect sleeper.

Fun fact, at the time my conversion was being done, Paul Newman and David Letterman had two brand new 960 Wagons delivered and a conversion using new Ford engine and transmissions was being done. Years before that, I met Paul Newman on the streets of NYC, all because I recognized the odd sound coming from his Volvo. He had his race shop stuff a Buick Grand National engine into it. Said it was a nightmare. Ford stuff bolts right up so I wasn't surprised to see his 960.

So you have the 5 spoke wheels, similar too. Don't tell me you have the tan interior in the Volvo too.

Yep, 5-spokes and gobi tan leather! They really trimmed the R model nicely...real leather everywhere.

not sure why that made me blow my midleton on my screen but hey we need to blame someone for that debacle :), never thought about Volvo. I can see it now, a Ferrari designer comes into the office after a night of too much vino and comments to his designer buddys he had some weird dream about a Volvo add he saw years ago but can't recall the significance of the add, as sits down at his computer to start his assigned task of designing a new Ferrari......

That is a great ad! I happen to have a V70R Wagon, and they are incredible cars. I would love to get a copy of that ad or even a poster of it. Any ideas? If you have an image of the ad, can you please email it to me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Pretty sure I saw the blower 5.0 960 wagon yesterday behind the Volvo dealership in Milford, CT that Paul Newman owned. It was outside beside a race car hauler with a Newman Racing logo and below that logo was a latin phrase which I didn't understand and can't remember, I'll try to stop by next week. No doubt covered with snow tonight and looking unloved. The car was last offered for about 95k !
